At the moment, apps can let us see how far through a task they are, such as Dolphin with it's file copy progress bar. The problem is that:

There's no obvious link between the different programs and where their progress is shown (in a small, minimised, generic system tray applet marked "i")
The systray applet either hides that anything is happening if minimised, or covers a pretty large section of screen to show only a small amount of information if maximised.
Strangely it is currently set to show for the first few seconds and then "dissapear" (minimise to the system tray). More than one user I know has pulled a flash drive still being written to thinking the copy was finished. Even if you understand it you're stuck with point 2 above.

If you're copying in Dolphin or burning a CD in K3B, wouldn't you prefer to have a beautiful looking progress bar that is economical with screen space, needs no big pop up windows, looks great and always gives you feedback, right on the application's taskbar entry?

This mockup is designed to show mainly the TaskBar (although I've included a tooltip in the mockup, too). This is just Dolphins, flash drive capacity bar, scaled and set to 80% opacity. If needed it could be used in addition to the current system. If you're copying three things at once it could show the progress of the combined tasks and still let people click on the "i" only if they want a more detailed breakdown. The bar could just fade in when used, and once finished could fade out once that app is given focus.

NOTE: This idea does *not* get rid of the system tray icon. Advanced users can still click on it to see all tasks together, or tasks started by closed apps. It just gets rid of huge pop ups, not visually linked to any app, having to be open to see progress but closing early and fooling new users into thinking the task is finished / failed.

Agreed and just yesterday I proposed something similar. It's sad to say that, but the current notification system is the worst I ever used in more than 15 years.

Just the other day I was using Gwenview over a kioslave connection. I almost threw the machine out of the window. Whenever I advanced through the thumbnail bar, Gwenview would prefetch the next 5 images. That is good. What is not so good is that 5 notifications are displayed, stacked vertically on top of each other, for at least 5 seconds. Not really unobtrusive I can tell you....

afaik this behaviour will be gone with kde 4.3 as those notifications will be grouped together and display something like "5 processes being processed" or somesuch.

...which is a tep in the right direction but does nothing for the main problems:

1. That when, to the new user, it looks like the notification "disappears", they reasonably assume the task is finished when it's disappeared. This would disappear only when the job is finished and the app's window is visible.

2. It's still unclear that the app and the active task are linked. Who thinks to maximise an "i" icon in the system tray to see if the app their using is active? A moving progressbar on the apps taskbar entry is obvious.

Since I posted this just last night, I just talked to my wife and found her trying to upload the same file 5 times simultaneously to the server because she thought it had finished each time it minimised. I've even told her that the notification dissapears partway through a task. Unintuitive things are remembered less. A clear progress bar on the apps task bar entry would have made the upload progress obvious that it was the same task started by Dolphin and still in progress.

Usually when I move/copy files, I do it from internal HD to external HD. And after I have started copy/move, I close the dolphin because I dont need it anymore and I can see process from systray. That is the great feature what this new idea can not allow.

What happens when user closes the Dolphin window? Does the process get canceled, does there pop-up a warining box that is not wise to do? Does the process bar move to systray?

I think that we need to think more about the process notification. The current impletation is correct way to go. One place where _all_ is shown.

And this really needs a big bar. I dont like to have text on the bar at all. I want them off so only the icons are shown. And I know people who keeps only tasks showed on windows what are minimized, this does not work at all on them.

There is lots of polishing of current way and we need to discuss how to make that better.
One those things is that the notification ! button is very small, even it takes two rows of systray. I think it should be always shown like the "Device notifier" widget. Have two different icons for it, one for processing and one for no-process. And when there is process, show there a 5/5, 3/5 or similar count how many process is left and how many has done. And the count is reseted when user opens/closes the menu again.

Probably the same thing would happen as when the window is closed. Either it would move to the system tray, would already also be in the system tray (but perhaps just not pop up), or would just disappear, depending on your settings. Much of the system tray notification system and notification system is already highly configurable in trunk.

For the rare apps that create tasks running in the background even when later closed, the process continues and could still be checked on from the systray if desired. This is stated in the original idea. It's just clearer that the task is still active, clearly linked to the app, leaving more screenspace that the notifier while the app window *is* open. This means that the large current notifier almost never needs to be seen.

I'm guessing you mean multiple *tasks*. As stated in the original idea, if you wished, you could still see the current detailed breakdown from the systray. With this you will just *also* get an indication *on the app with running task(s)* that it has something active. I imagine that in the case of one app running 2+ tasks the bar would show an average. Systray (or tooltip) could still show a breakdown of each though.

It is not wise that information is moved between different places, depending what is open and what ain't. One universal place is best solution.

Usability is the reason. We do not need configuration options if it ends up having information to get moved and user can not learn right away where the information is always.

That is nice thing what is coming, but it means that process bar can not be long, it would be very short/small and then it is again a usability problem. Best way is then again one universal knotify widget/place where all information is located.

Yes, but that is again a usability problem. You minimize window, you get progress bar on task panel. If you have window open, it would be on systray. If you have no-text -tasks, it would end up again for different kind.

If we polish the current idea of one universal place, we have only one place, what is always samekind and same way working. And we do not have such big usability problems what we should need to fix for it.

This idea works fine only when the window is open. But it can not be open all the time. And this would make problems even for then. Like you have Kopete open. Someone sends you a file and you accept it. Where should the progess bar show? Someone sends then a message, it has actions (view, ignore) on it. Where should this go? You would end up to have two different places for information what could be placed on one place only, like now it is possible.

You see the same window title text twice, both at the top of the window and in the task bar. No one sees this as a problem. It's just putting it where it's easy to understand. I use it fairly often myself and have gotten used to it. Being used to it though doesn't make it ideal. I've personally seen (and had quite a few others having seen) that new users though don't connect a generic system tray icon to the app running an active task. Just like the system activity monitor, it's useful, but by itself not a beginners tool. Just like the window title text, this info can be shown both in the taskbar, *and* more in depth in other locations more advanced users know to check (such as the systray). Even if we still have the huge systray notification popup (which I suspect will be improved soon) then it almost never *needs* to be seen, but people can still use it just like today if desired.

This way people can use what they need, zero configuration, windows open, closed or minimised. Nothing lost and a lot of clarity gained.

This is is just regarding progress notifications (ie where you normally see a progress bar). Standard notifications like those in Kopete, Quassel etc. wouldn't be touched by this. The intended use case for the original idea is for users to see your apps progress through large tasks without any clicking, large pop ups or needing to know that all apps are hidden in a systray icon.

Why limit it to one or the other? Why not both? That way the user experience is more consistent, if the progress can always be found in the same way, whether you prefer all progress in one place in the system tray, or quickly visible without clicking on the application in the task bar, no configuration needed.

This has already been addressed. The system tray still exists, just as it does now. You don't lose anything, except having a large pop up when you haven't asked for it. You just have an *extra* indicator that links the progress to the app it belongs to, that is clearly visible even to a new user. Users advanced enough to know that all tasks can be seen in the system tray can still view them from there exactly as they do now. Because progress can normally be seen from the taskbar though, there is no need to have a large pop up that mysteriously dissapears before the job is done, when it's first opened. It's right there on your app in the taskbar.

If people were really concerned about continuity, then closing an app with a running task could pop up a dialogue with a message like "This application has an active task running. You can see the progress of this task in the system tray icon." with a checkbox saying "Don't show this message again." This is going beyond the scope of this suggestion though, as this is something missing even now from the current notification system.

This may have been obvious, but it occured to me that this would also be useful for things that do not normally appear in the notification area. For instance a media player could use this to display the progress of a song or video. An image viewer could us it to show how far through a slideshow you are. A presentation program could use it to show how far through the presentation you are. There are probably numerous other uses if software developers were allowed to.

Now that the updated notifications have come down the line on Kubuntu, I was checking it out to see if they addressed the issues in this idea. They're definitely nice (smaller, more compact etc). But they don't touch any of my issues.

They still dissapear part way through a task, confusing new users.
New users still have no way of knowing that the action they started in one apps window / systray item is now run by (and hidden in) a completely different systray item.
Users are still stuck between notifications that are hidden, or take up huge screenspace. Here's what I see in my normal, daily use of Dolphin+Kate:

That's on a 23 inch monitor! What would this look like on a netbook?

All of this could have been one small progressbar, no more obtrusive than the one in Dolphin for showing how full flash drives are. Anyone who wanted to see stuff like this could still click on the systray. The rest of us could ignore it or just glance at the taskbar. Easy.

To anyone who hasn't voted yet: please compare the image above with the one at the start of this thread and ask yourself: which is the better way forward for KDE? Vote accordingly. Thankyou!

Second, the progress notifications you see are still early. They just developed the new system tray protocol and it is still under development. It will be at least another release before it is finalized.

The arrow you're talking about is very useful. It would be even more useful to be "on" by default.

As it stands no though, it still doesn't address points 1 and 2 (disappears partway through and no obvious link between the app and the systray). It does improve point 3 (taking up huge screen real estate) although not as much as this threads idea.

Fortunately, as you say, the spec is still being refined. I'm just hoping that it can be refined to include this idea, which can work nicely together with what's already here. I'd just really love to see something simple and unobtrusive like this as standard, that also let savvy people who know kde click the systray icon for more detailed info.

What's everyone else think?

About it hiding after a period of time, in KDE 4.3 in the system tray settings there is an option "Automatically hide new notifications and jobs after a short delay". It is checked by default, but you can uncheck it.

This is a usability issue though more than a feature issue.

Having jobs hide before finishing by default is causing many people trying out KDE (that I've seen) huge problems. Flash drives are being taken out in the middle of having files written to them regularly and worse. Not a good first impression! Changing any of these options requires knowing they're there, which should be unnecessary for the new / average user. If the "auto-hide notifications" option was off by default though, your screen gets covered by notification windows popping in and out (eg: the photo above). Also not a good first impression!

That's why this idea is important.

With a small, clear progress meter kept out of the way in the task bar, your tasks progress are *always* visible. It's clear what apps have jobs in progress and when they're finished.

Imagine if every time files were added or removed from your flash drive, your screen became partially covered with pop up notifications, showing how empty / full the drive was at that instant. That would be irritating, distracting and needless. That's why we have this information shown by a stylish, clear meter in Dolphin that hides itself automatically when it's not needed. Advanced users can still find more information with right click -> properties on the right folder. This works. Users understand it. This idea takes this already working concept and applies it to active tasks, with more advanced info available with a single click in the systray.

However, there are 2 entirely different notifications types:
* About the past - Copying is done, received an IM message
* About the present - Showing the progress bar of the job, like copying files dialog.
And they should be threaded differently. At least *present* tasks should be minimized to one row bar showing progress, but not hidden entirely.

Second point - messages should get ID's. If next message arrives with the same id, it should replace previous one - not to be displayed as different one.

Best example, I had a buggy power cable, and sometimes it starts plugging in/out every 1second, and that continues until I replug it. However, there should be only one message showing connection info, not 20 all over the screen. There could be a change in background, if there era many messages with same ID in order to get proper attention.

Hello all,

As the person that did most of the work related to progress notifications in the systray, I'd like to adres some of the usability concerns that are mentioned in this topic.

First let me start by saying this idea (jobs in task bar) could be a nice addition to jobs in the systemtray. Both ways of presenting jobs serve different ways of working (application based vs activity based), so having both available would satisfy both groups of people. I for one don't see the need to link a job to an application (I couldn't care less if I have a couple of downloads whether they were started in one of my dolphin windows, konqueror, or ktorrent or whatever), but as long as these task bar progress notifications are non intrusive I don't see a problem with someone implementing this. The dataengine is in place... linking a job to the exact correct window could be tricky, cause I don't think something like that is already in the jobview dbus interface (not sure, I'd have to look that up), but that spec can always be expanded a bit.

Now let me adress some of the issues proposed here. A couple are already fixed in 4.3: autohiding is configurable, when hiding the jobs slide into the systray (with compositing enabled that is), and there's an animated spinner whenever jobs are still running. Finished jobs automatically pop up with a clickable link and no progress bar so it's more obvious when a job has finished. This all should help with people accidently unplugging usb sticks and what not. I'm not a fan of changing the default to auto hide off, since it's just not sensible imo. All you need to know is when a job is started and when it is finished, for the rest it should just get out of the way. But at least people/distro's who don't like that behavior can change it.

Now to one of the most prominent issues: flooding of jobs. First there's the issue of unnesesarry jobs: some applications spawn jobs for prefetching of stuff, downloading temporary files and what not. This is unfortunate, because there is a mechanism to surpress showing progress for these kind of jobs: the KIO::HideProgressInfo flag. Whenever you see an application show job progress about absolutely useless stuff, please report that as a bug to the appriopriate application.
Other point is the growing list of completed jobs. They do time out, but if you're really active it could get quite big. But just like running jobs can be collapsed to a single progress bar with the little icon in the running jobs group, the same can be done for completed jobs. This setting is persistent between plasma sessions, and when collapsed it will almost take up no room. You can even for example drag the entire completed jobs group to your desktop or somewhere else in your panel, and new completed jobs will then spawn there. So the behavior of jobs in the systemtray is already more customizable then most people are aware of.
Then there are still things that will see improvement in 4.4. We have the idea to queue notifications/jobs, maybe add some way to prioritize messages, and limit the maximum number of completed jobs in that group and put the rest away in some sort of log viewer which will be put away behind a button. This will hopefully keep the tray cleaner and less intrusive.

I'm not seeing this. True enough, you get a notification when the copy has finished as far as Dolphin is concerned, except that it hasn't actually finished as the drive lights are still blinking (often for several minutes). I'd like to see a fix to this so I can stop running gkrellm, which shows I/O activity on the drive. Or even have a plasma widget to do the same, as the disk monitor thing only shows disk occupancy and not activity.
