If you read PlanetKDE, you may have noticed that there was a combined Booth, Web and Marketing Sprint in Stuttgart last weekend. While those blog posts discussed the fun to be had in getting a load of KDE contributors together in one place, the event was really about having some important discussions and getting a lot of serious work done so that our presentation of KDE matches the quality of our products. For mailinglist I usually have the respective identity set for the mailinglist's folder.

Not only that, but I have family mail in a folder, so I set an identity for the family mail too. This is far better than having to set it up for each person.

I agree that the behavior should be configurable.

It is certainly convenient the way that it is if you are used to that way (esp. since the right-click menu comes up immediately and you can just select the menu option by releasing the mouse button), but there are many people (myself included) who are used to the other way (because we also frequently use Gnome, Windows or other environment where it works that way) and would like to have that option available.

Dragging and Dropping is in my opinion some movement, so I'd rather expect moving than copying files. It's done in GNOME as well this way, just moving between different devices results in copying (which I can understand, as you want to share data on Devices and not just have it once.

It works quite well for me and allows me to easily drag'n'drop music from my library to my mp3 as well as moving files on my harddisk (In fact, the need of copying files on your harddisk so you have multiple entities is quite rare).

So, please adopt this behaviour!

actually the one sw that does the tuning work decently (including all linux os and not only kde) is kaffeine. some other players does a job or accept configuration files (me-tv, vlc, totem...) that are not completely interoperable.
My idea is to move the very well done tuning module of kaffeine to kde systemsettings, and consequently the channels.dvb file from .kde/share/apps/kaffeine to an appropriate place to be used and shared between all kde players like dragon, kaffeine, amarok (for dvb radios, i mean). Eventually, this file could be transformed to xml to let adding tags to channels (i.e. sports, comedy, cartoons...), adding stars/favorites and link relative infos in nepomuk framework.

Actually kde lacks a very useful program (should say a must-have). A plasmoid that illustrates the jobs queue and the ink level of a printer. Note that the one qt based program for displaying ink level is qink (qt3 based, seems dead), while libinklevel library is under active development.
so there's a need of such a tool.

No Annew, I refer to the fact that in KDE 3.5 I have the time displayed in a much larger font than is possible with KDE 4.x at the same size panel. It fits the panel just fine by the way.

It may seem trivial to you but to anyone with poor eyesight or who is otherwise visually impaired, I assure you this is a very valuable feature and it is ashame that this feature is not present in KDE 4.x

I guess I'll have to stick with KDE 3.5 until they get this fixed, perhaps by KDE 4.5?

kdewebkit is Webkit integration for KDE. This plus konqueror webkit kpart means you can use Webkit in KDE/Konqueror instead of khtml ... So it gives you a choice of engine and makes your gmail work like it should.

If you want something now then IMHO Arora 0.10.1 is a nice Qt4 Webkit browser. I'm posting from it right now

My first try was Arora and works really well, some problems with flash, but much better experience than with Konqueror. But I want to try Chrome and when it was available I install the alpha in my openSUSE thinking that would be unusable but, surprise, surprise, it was fast, very stable, great architecture and has all the things I need in a browser. In two weeks I stop using Arora and now my main browser is Chrome for last three months approximately.

But if I must choose between Arora and Konqueror I choose Arora with no doubt.

Hi gents !

In kde 4.3 the default theme is very nice (the one with the grey-ish taskbar). However, it's a problem for the system tray, because it's hard for me to notice well the state of a few system tray icons, namely the kopete icon when blinking, and the sound volume icon, when flipping the mouse wheel over it.
So, is there a way to customize the background colour ?

I had this problem on my daughters Desktop, running Slackware 13.
Problem occured 19th November 2009.
I have 2 identical Desktops HW + SW both recieving updates at the same time.
Only one account on one desktop was effected!

She switched on the PC, was able to use the keyborad to login but once logged in, there was no keyboard function in KDE, in Firefox, in terminals opened from KDE etc. PC boots to runlevel 4. The mouse was uneffected and worked fine.

At this point she asked for my assistance. I logged her out and logged in as my user. My user was uneffected. I could probably have ssh'd to machine or alt+Fnkey to new console.
I compared files in the 2 home directories. + running processes. There were no additional processes running under her user or anything particularly obvious, however she did have an additional hidden directory called .freddy which I have no explanation for, I deleted it along with .kde .mozilla and anything that would just get replaced from the skeleton when she logged on next.
I logged out, She logged back in and changed her desktop preferences back to the way she likes them and everything was fine. I spent about 15 minutes looking into this, that's all. I would have liked to have spent a lot longer working out what happened.

This is most likely some little glitch with KDE4 but I dont rule out some kind of primative linux malware.

i.e Start's a process to muck up your KDE setting when you log in, trapping and possibly redirecting keyboard entry. Process would not be running once its messed your KDE settings to redirect keyboard and you are logged in.
I dont understand enough about KDE to know how you would do that or weather its possible.
If above is possible, its also possible to read trapped key strokes, if you reboot and log in again. search for sudo attempts. Im guessing.

This is unlikely to be malware of any form. It is more likely that the Keyboard settings in System Settings > Regional & Language > Keyboard Layout were somehow activated or messed up.

Hi there, I experience a strange problem on my computer (kde 4.3.3 on kubuntu 9.10):

Whenever I connect my digital camera with a cable to a USB port, plasma-desktop either crashes altogether or partly, for example the main toolbar stops working. When I restart plasma-desktop everything works fine again, even with the camera connected.
Another problem is that my card reader has stopped worked for no apparant reason: When I connect it to a USB port and plug in a memory card, it is not detected (used to work a couple of weeks ago). USB keys work fine, though.

Has anybody else experienced such problems and maybe knows a way out?

This command needs to be executed in Konsole, running as your user, with Dolphin closed.

as bad as konqueror is, dalphin is worse... it's a wast even offering it.

in Konqueror4;

*i want the **** 'search' gone from the 'location bar'. i don't use it as a browser and want my 'location' to reflect the long paths on my network!
*i want some sort of 'status bar' so that i Don't have to 'select all' in order to simply see how may files are in a directory.
*i want the **** 'nav panel' to actually do something. can't see all directories in it, can't drag to it, can't use it, it's useless!
*i want the ability to use keyboard to activate items on a context menu. i.e. right click> create new> I should be able to just hit 'F' for folder.
*i want right click 'select all' (there is no way, other than ctrl+a to select all, not even in a menu (file, edit etc). Even when you've ctrl+a and select all, again with status, there is no indication of how many files you have selected. I can Not believe that the 'computer geeks' that are coding this stuff, find no need to know if the number of files they are selecting (ctrl+a), is the number of files they expect to del, copy, move, package etc.. you can't even click on one file and then scroll down or up and shift+click to select everything in between. it blows my mind how dumb, smart people are.
*i want right click> past here (this would include content of 'clip board' as text as file.
*i want right click 'open counsel here' (open terminal here).

In the toolbar configuration, select the "search bar" from the dropdown, and remove the search bar from it.

For everything else, I don't have any of the problems you described (other than that a few of the things are in the main menu instead of the right-click (because if you had everything in there, you'd be able to find nothing). If you're using an old version of KDE, you should really upgrade.

..you're telling me you have no need for knowing how many files you have selected (what if you expect to del 8 or 9 files and oops, you selected 10.. how would you know (i know the move to trash dialog comes up and you can check it there, but wouldn't it be nice in a 'status line', somewhere?) or the ability to drag a folder to another folder in the file tree of the nav panel? how about...

Which version of KDE are you using? Since your using openSUSE ( probably 11.1 ) you will have KDE 4.1 unless you upgraded from the Build Service.

If this is your version, you may find it helpful to update.

There's no need to be rude. I would have thought that you knew by now that you can configure the toolbar, and yes, you can remove the searchbar. Perhaps if you'd looked at your options instead of ranting you'd have found it.

i have totally left MicroSucks and this Linux station is my 'production' ws now. I can not be without it. I have been keeping upto date with my patches etc..
'UpDating' from 11.1 / 4.1, what are the chances i mess it up so bad i have to start over, again?
i'm using both FireFox 3.5.5 and Manisfield ? (3.7.2b?, i think updated from 2.6.2b (Namoroka)). i am a web coder and Need this to work... I'm not sure if i need to do an ISO burn of the 11.3 / KDE 4.3 to DVD and do an install/update??? Can i update through YaST2?

I just clicked on the 'services' tab of the nav panel (the red golf flag) and i Instantly was at a 'login' screen with myself and 'root'.. Logged in as me and konqueror and FF wanted to 'restore session' and most everything was back i it was....
What the F* happened ?

hello,
i'm using kde-4.3.3
and i'd like to add some international characters to my us layout ( i have also a bulgarian one ).
i've found this document which is exactly what i need

but in kde4 there is no layout called "U.S. English w/ISO9995-3"
i've tried using olpc2 but is not the same thins.
also the 3rd level keys work in konsole and skype but not in firefox or thunderbird.
International (with dead key) works fine, but i don't find it handy.
any tips?

That's correct; Compose is not a modifier key.

I don't know about the layouts, though, because I've never had the need to change them.

Naturally anything that needs an Internet connection can't load until you have the connection. It's almost impossible, on most systems, to get that connection fast enough. It isn't a big deal, though, if you remember that clicking on any such plasmoid and then hitting F5, once the connection is established. will bring them to life. Some plasmoids do seem clever enough to do it without my aid, yawp and the social-desktop widgets, for instance, but my remote-drive folderviews always need a refresh like that.

I clicked on Task Manager settings - but there doesn't seem to be an option that completely helps. Checking off on all three filters doesn't seem to help. E.G I only have one copy of Kmail opened and is "maximized" and showing on the desktop but the task bar still has 3 Kmail icons on it. If I click on any of the 3 it minimizes the Kmail window and puts a 4th icon on the task bar. Needless to say the task bar gets pretty crowded very quickly. .

I asked on the KWin IRC channel, and they recommended you try backing up xorg.conf and removing it, and letting X automatically determine everything.

Without a xorg.conf I was only able to run kde at super low resolution and compositing still didnt work.

I think that we talking about this module in the past and, well, is really powerful but so complex for simple users.

I understand why this button was disabled and a check would be a good improvement. By the why, if you are changing things, the proper place to add or remove actions for a basic users was in plasmoid an not in Device Manager, that is so complex. Yes, you and I can handle it without problems and is really powerful but many people can't.

I recognized the background work in that module or, for example, in Nepomuk, but it's important to note that without an easy interface few people can use or understand it.

I remember a beautiful Pirelly advertisement. In that, Carl Lewis was ready to run but he wearing red heels and slogan was "Power is nothing without control". My English is not good but I hope you understand what I try to explain you .

Hi,

KDE version is 3.5.1.
Normally the application runs on windows. But according to oracle, it should run the same on linux.

I will use strace to look at the files accessed and compare the environment variables once again.

In the meantime we started up the environment in steps:
X with firefox --> application runs fine
Kwin --> application runs fine
ksmserver --> application becomes slow.
I have no idea which conclusion I can draw from this observation (I don't know exactly what ksmserver does, but it is alot I assume).
Are there tips/bugs known related with ksmserver?

KSMServer is responsible for starting up the KDE session. It is more likely to be something that KSMServer itself starts. Try looking at the process list, and killing kded4, krunner, plasma-desktop, or klauncher.

You may wish to try disabling Nepomuk as well. Is there anything in "top" that shows high CPU usage?

In Plugins -> Effects menu I only have a grayed out "No Plugin" message, but kipi plugins are installed (the kde4 version). And in the "Batch Processing" menu I have "image effects" and"filter images" which I assume are the kipi-plugins and they do work.

Hey guys of this great piece of software,

I have currently 128 rated tracks, at least 120 of them rated over 3. Now I set up a dynamic playlist: Fixed quota (the first one in the list, I translated literally..) of 100% for songs of the rating over 3. 7 songs to be queued in after playback, 13 to be there following the currently played one.
And now: I almost every time get duplicates. 5 Minutes ago it was most ridiculous: I had 5 (five!) times the same song in the list.
Anything I can do about that? Actually what I'ld love is a playlist that is somewhat half-dynamic. Like Rhythmbox that has a dynamic playlists for all songs rated, even if only by a star, and sorting it thereby. But I see that this is not within the idea of Amarok. I can cope with that, but having the same song played 5 times in a row is somewhat bad.
Any hint or help or such?

Hm, there is some work going on currently for the Dynamic Playlists, since we lacked a maintainer for it before. But now we have a new maintainer and he already has pushed some bugfixes to Amarok 2.2-git, so this should greatly improve by 2.2.2

Since there is some confusion about a few basics in the Amarok 2.x series, find some more information here:

SQLite
Amarok doesn't use SQLite anymore as the default database, but an embedded MySQL. This database is stored in $HOME/.kde/share/apps/amarok/mysqle/

Transition to version 2.2.1
For a smooth transition to version 2.2.1, you need to do a full rescan of the collection, then restart Amarok if this is not done automatically. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hmmmm. when I select [Save Playlist to "Media Device Playlist"] a new playlist entry appears in the "Saved Playlists" area. It shows up in the list order as if it were a part of the iPod's playlists (it looks like the iPods playlist come first in the list order and then comes the local collection's playlists). But the iPod display does not show anything synchronizing as it does when you perform a "Copy to -> iPod" command.

I wonder if this feature is not complete.

When player is set to play random tracks, the previous track button also goes to a random track. This flies in the face of logic, unless Amarok can travel in time. The previous track button should obviously point to the previous track, not a random track.

Oh, and I'm sorry if this is mentioned elsewhere. I did a search but couldn't find anything related.

Hello,

Could anyone help me with this problem? ...
its connected with scrobbling tracks to Last.fm service, but ONLY, when playing .flac files with tags saved in .cue file.
The problem exists from early 2.0 version. I was trying different svn and git builds. Now, in 2.2.1 its the same
I am using xine, distro is opensuse 11.1.

I am ready to provide other informations.

Hi.

I just installed 2.2.1 to my Gentoo box. I tend to listen long mixes (over 1 hour long or so) and I loved the feature that when I logged out Amarok would place a position marker on current track position.

So when I logged in, I would simply press Play to continue listening from that position.

But with 2.2.1 I am not able to do that again.

I know there is "Resume playback on start" option in the settings and it works, but I don't want music to start playing automatically when logging in.

Am I missing something or is this feature really gone?

Sorry, but reporting crashes here is not very useful, especially with no additional information of what you were doing when it crashed and a valid backtrace.

I disagree. I think it is useful for the community to know that there is some degree of instability with the latest version. People may not want to upgrade to the latest version due to this information.

devehf: if you want to be useful to the community you provide a valid backtrace so the developers can fix it.
If you have installed your system correctly, a crash will trigger Dr. Konqi to start and generate a backtrace you can submit to the bug tracker.

JFYI: Amarok 2.2.1 is rock stable on my test PC and so is Amarok 2.2-git

Everything else is just pure trolling.

Ah, there is the contradiction. How are users supposed to know the definition of "correct"?

I installed "correctly" per the blog post and other sparse documentation.

Dr. Konqi does not start and generate a backtrace when Amarok crashes.

I have now included the debug components of Amarok in the hopes that this will help with obtaining a backtrace. I have no idea if this will produce the desired observation data. So far it has not.

Perhaps the crashing is due to the rescan on my collection. It is worth some discussion and absolutely not "trolling".

I did not receive a dialog.

I have re-scanned my collection again and the crashing appears to have stopped.

Anyone who has upgraded to 2.2.1 should definitely re-scan their collection.

Is there anyway the installations process can do this rescanning automatically based on previous preferences? Just a suggestion, since it sounds like the underlying data storage structure for collection information has changed significantly.

Hello all,

I have spent some time to think about this but I haven't got any good solution yet. What is the best way to access the pop up palette? Right now it can be accessed by right clicking, but that is good because there is no way to distinguish single-click and double-click.

Current ideas:
1. Double-left-click: not good for the reason explained above
2. Double-right-click: not good for the same reason
3. Right-click: reserved
4. CTRL+(a key): What key? Hard to use for tablet (PC) users
5. Tool tip behaviour - when the mouse coordinate doesn't move for say 0.5 seconds then the palette will show up: irritating
6. Middle-click (by Cyrille): Hard to access for some tablet users(?) But the best possible solution.

Any thoughts? We also need keyboard short cut aside of mouse/tablet short cut

After a couple of days I often see some swap being used and that's a good thing. It means stuff which is not needed is removed (relocated to swap) from memory and the new free memory can be used for increasing efficiency, e.g. I/O buffers.

I understand the swap thing, sorta.

But I should have added some other information: what caused me to look at mem usage in the first place was Firefox turning to mud and getting dead slow to start up. If swap was working as you suggest, I would have expected it to get faster, since it was all cached / swapped / what not.

Regardless, all gets 'fixed' with a cold reboot.

I noticed some fairly severe cautions about its use, though. Have you experienced lockup or data loss when using it?

I have not experienced in lockups while using it. Note that it requires an X session to use.

I use Barclays. They used to support the direct connect method to Microsoft Money. When they withdrew that a few years ago they did a reasonable job of notifying me and providing a statement export function from their internet banking portal that uses OFX (or at least I'm 99% sure that's the format). It works great for me.

Are you importing directly (not direct connect) into KMM, or download and then import?

I have a temporary solution that might work for some people until this bug gets some attention

set the tab title to '%w', and replace the dbus call with

Code: Select all: echo -ne "\033]0;myhost:mymsg\007";

This one will maintain the change until the script that set it ends, but it can also be overridden by the server (usually by bashrc setting the 'PROMPT_COMMAND' variable)

again, not a perfect fix, but it does well enough in my case, so I thought I might share.

However as said by other people: it's just a matter of effort. As of now only some developers are interested in making its software to work on Windows. I think a lot of developers don't use Windows anymore, and some even don't have a copy (you know, you still have to pay for some OSes).

It's just a matter of lack of interest (and of developers).

So: it's just the same as GNOME, some programs work, some don't. Oh, and you can run Plasma on Windows, while you can't run GNOME Shell.

yes, I looked for it in the whole file system. I tried to reinstall KDE in order to be sure that kdelibs was there, and I correctly saw it when installing kde-base-workspace package.
Is there a way to manually put that file there?

It should be in %PROGRAMFILES%\kde\bin, I have it.
I just looked into the package:
http://winkde.org/pub/kde/ports/win32/r ... in.tar.bz2
and it is present. It should be in vc90 package too if you are using MSVC packages.

You can open the archive with a normal archive reader (e.g. 7-Zip), extract the file, and put it \kde\bin.

I am sorry.
From the file in the link I read mingw; I remembered that I choose MSVC instead of mingw in one of the installation steps. Therefore I removed and reinstalled with mingw4 instead of MSVC, now the file is there.

However probably it's not your complete fault, as you're not the first user ending with a messed up install.

Thanks for the links panda84,

I was using the latest downloader, freshly installed, and had just deleted the whole KDE directory, so as far as I know, there shouldn't have been old versions. There is a chance that there was stable and development versions installed at the same time as I wasn't aware you had to keep them separate.

How I wish the Windows installer had a more user friendly interface that:

a) Had an "update all" button, just as any Linux package manager has and
b) Didn't allow you to do things that are known to break, but not user obvious ie if you have package a selected and it conflicts with package b, don't allow me to choose both.
c) Didn't confuse the heck out of even a relatively technical user like me with different compilation versions

*sigh*
