window switching effects

Fri Oct 05, 2012 11:44 pm
It might be something wrong with my setup but the different "alt+tab" effects(box switch, cover switch, flip switch) are looking exactly the same. In particular I'm trying to use flip switch but it looks like the normal thumbnail select(box switch?).

Arch linux
kde 4.9.2
nvidia proprietary drivers

Has anyone noticed the same strange behavior?

Have you enabled the effects in question before trying to use them in System Settings > Desktop Effects > All Effects?

I have.

Actually here is everything I have enabled because as far as i know there maybe be some conflicts between them. I remember blur not working together with wobbly windows. It seems to be not working now too, but I kind of expected it.

Code: Select all
blur
dashboard
glide
login
logout
magic lamp
screenshot
sheet
sliding popups
taskbar thumbnails
translucency
wobbly windows
startup feedback
dialog parent
dim inactive
slide back
desktop cube
desktop cube animation
flip switch
outline
present windows

The system I'm using is pretty new(several hours since install) so I fully expect something to be wrong on my side. I appreciate everyone taking the time to look into this.

I know you said you are using the nvidia driver but could you nevertheless post the output of
Code: Select all
lspci -k | grep -i vga -A2

Sure:
Code: Select all
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF110 [GeForce GTX 570] (rev a1)
Subsystem: NVIDIA Corporation Leadtek WinFast GTX 570
        Kernel driver in use: nvidia

If you think something is wrong in the driver department, unfortunately I can't try nouveau + gallium3d because of this nasty bug - https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/30840. I tried the opengl ES backend with proprietary drivers but it didn't work at all for me.

Some other things I have set are:
Code: Select all
compositing type: open GL
qt graphics system: raster (not sure about this one but was like this after install. Don't remember it being here in 4.8.4)
(checked) use opengl2 shaders
(checked) use vsync

Just to make sure everyone is on the same track - all other effects are working fine.
Can someone verify that if you enable the same effects I have(posted above) everything is working as expected.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-disp ... river.html

Looks like you need the 260.19.29 driver version for your card. Do a pacman -Qi for your driver to check you've got the correct version.

I guess I should have mentioned the driver version already. My bad. I'm using 304.51. Which seems to be the newest one even on the nvidia downloads page. I'm not expecting trying the older driver you suggested will do anything(might be wrong though).

If nvidia says that is the correct driver for your card, perhaps you should at least try it??? ;D

run "kcmshell4 kwintabbox" - did you configure the effect to be used there? (just loading the effect in the all effects tab has no direct impact on its invocation)

Also ensure to use the OpenGL compositor, since XRender is not capable of coverflow and flip (lacks the concept of a frustum)

Did you look in System Settings -> Window Behavior -> Task Switcher -> Main Tab and look in the combo box under Visualization ?

Quick question on this subject. I have a Windows 7 Pro64 install with an admin account and a user account that I use every day.

When logged in as the user I change the preferences (giving Admin credentials to be able to open it), getting rid of animation and press save. When I restart and log back in, the visual effects are still set to Custom and some of the boxes are still unselected but minimize/maximise is re-selected as are shadows and most others.

Why are my settings not being remembered after a restart.... rather annoying to say the least

Thanks

I think you found the wrong forum. This is a forum about a desktop environment for non-Windows, that is "Linux". Have a look at http://www.kde.org about our software :-)
