Open on Desktop N menu or dialog?

Mon Oct 29, 2012 10:14 am
Hi all!

How can I open applications and/or files on specific desktops other than the current one?

I am aware that this can be done with predefined KWin rules, but those apply to all such matching events. I would like to be able to do this on an ad-hoc basis and send an app to a specific desktop at just this particular occasion and not every time.

The only way I know of is to first open the application or file and then send it to a particular desktop in a second step using a variety of interactions with Kwin or the plasma panel etc. My question is, can this be done in one step using the GUI? If not, can it be implemented using KWin scripting?

What I am looking for is a GUI element that for instance would extend the "Open With" menu option that pops up when right-clicking a file in Dolphin with a nested yet optional "Open On" desktop option following the choice of application:

Right click file -> Open With -> Okular -> Desktop 1..4

In this example, clicking Okular opens the application on the current desktop as usual, whereas continuing to the nested menu gives the option of selecting a desktop.

I am not sure where to file this question since it relates to desktop management but relevant GUI elements would appear as a dialogs/menus in KDE apps such as Dolphin when opening a file, for instance.

If this is currently not possible, I'd like to request this feature to be implemented in future versions of KDE :-)

Up.
kstart is a console command line right,? so not relevant with the question [a gui tool]
I am looking for the same feature except that i am fine without choosing the app which open the file (that is the default one is fine for me)
So just a open ->desktop N would be fine. anychance it exists already somewhere ?
Typical example ; Right click on the a .pdf -->open-> desktop 2. ....

run "kcmshell4 filetypes", add a new action that says "open on desktop..." and have it run a script invoking kdialog (for the number) and kstart?
