Looks more like a subtle cof to me. ;p
Could you upload a detail shot? I really like how you detail all elements.

I had intended the thread in the general discussion forum for that, but let's start a thread in the gallery forum. Can you do that, please?

Re: When the Earth breaths  Topic is solved

Since I'm not quite sure the purpose for the work I will be very careful to give critique and even double careful since I'm critiquing an professional on the field that I yet study :)

This is what comes to my mind:

If the work is supposed to be an background to something else or a just background with no anything specifically interesting or not to point anything then it works very well. BUT if this was not the intention then I think the work miss some story point in case that that there could be some small point or color to attract the interest of the viewer. Maybe for example couple of pixels tall person walking on a edge of the rock or something else very small painted in complementary color, greenish or greenish-blue or greenish-yellow. This to make the audience wander what is happening in the work.

There is also two very powerful vertical lines in the work. They lead the eye to the center of the work but as said before there is nothing happening really. The center is there just as beautiful as everything else is also in the work. Actually now that I study it more I'm not sure does those vertical lines lead the eye to the top or the bottom. If to top then it is good that you painted the rock in the top of the work so that it stops the movement and brings the eyes back to the center.

Anyways for me this work feels a bit empty. Don't get me wrong it is amazingly done with all the details, forms, shadows and coloring but it just miss that something I'm not quite sure what it is. Most probably by adding the story to the work would fix everything, like walking people on the cliff or make the saturated rock in the middle as some kind of a castle.

Hope this helps :)

I respect a lot the critiques from people like you who takes his time to write an ellaborated critique
I think you are right in some things that honestly deserve more attention for future pictures. Is good for all of us to be examinated by others, they have another point of view. for example i agree about center of interest. I usually tend to make all "overworked" because i love details and maybe i try to emphasize ALL in terms of detail and focus my attention points using color. and this is something that i am working on to make my pictures faster and clearer. I think this comes from my "oil paintings" but maybe is only a thing that i need to improve.

About the composition, I put the strong lines to guide you to the main rock, which is brighter than the others and more detailed.
The top rock and side rocks are used to frame the picture. again too much detailed? uhhmmm maybe better with focus blur applied ? and destroy all the detail? well, we have to be able to delete, change, or redo what we paint, no matter the effort this operation needs. :'(

Story:the weakest point?. In the birth of nanths i described a whole scene with a background story that make stronger the message. But here is not the case. I personally love the idea "Landscape is the main Character" but after some talks with other painters they have the same impression "Empty". I tested to paint some characters in tiny scale but i found a sooo used trick that didn´t work for my eye.
same in "The Green Cove".(The green cove is different because was designed as a "pure background" where we can put some characters in another layer. like a film plate. So this "concept" of "emptiness" is intriguing me. Maybe we are too much used to see characters?

That's all folks. What do you think about it?

Heh, indeed, when I first started looking around the picture, I was also trying to find a character or the likes, and then I realized that in fact, it's like a bad habit, we're too used to expecting a character there. In many ways it's the fault of the viewer, we've been conditioned to expect to see something different if the painting guides us somewhere.

It didn't have to be a character though. There's obviously something going on here, you can see a fountain, but the focal point is a rock. People get confused, though, because the rock doesn't seem so different from the other rocks around it. They can't answer the question: Why is that rock the focal point?

This question could have been answered if this rock looked different than the ones around it. It could be a mass of crystals, for example, or it could be shaped like a twisted dead tree, or be vaguely shaped like something else that's recognizable. Or there could be something in the fountain below it. A hand sticking out of the water would have raised a lot of eyebrows, or the waters could be reflecting something unexpected.

That said, the scenery is absolutely gorgeous. The details and hues are beautiful. :D

@valerievK: thanks for your comments and ideas. I was considering to make a sword "like Xcalibur" but i find it the idea "a topic" and i rejected. Your ideas about crystals is interesting, also used a lot but i found more sense to that idea. maybe i test it after the DVD project.
Also the "something coming from the water was explored, and i thought in woman taking a bath in a seductive pose. hmm not too much good because the background then was only a background. So i rejected the sketch. Anyway i think the water here is merely decorative, and unused :( in some way. damn it! I take note of all the ideas. and thanks for comment with good content.

You're welcome! Well, it didn't have to be a person in the water. It could have been anything, a rubber ducky for example.
Whoa, I could totally imagine that. x D
