I have found that between major upgrades 4.x->4.x+1 it is normally a good idea to start off with a fresh ~/.kde(4). Just delete move it and spend a day setting up your defaults again. It saves trouble with migration and mucky conversions in the long run.

As for the Kontact suite, you're not alone. If the issues are too serious, I would change PIM suites. Don't let a buggy, incomplete and struggling for maintainers part of KDE let the rest of your desktop down.

fresh ~/.kde(4). Just delete it

For the record, this is not the recommended way to solve configuration issues. It is much better, if necessary (IOW, only if issues appear), to move (not delete) specific configuration files.

Deleting that directory will also wipe downloaded stuff through GHNS.

Deleting the ~/.kde(4) directory will also erase any KDE PIM data such as contacts, email, calendars, as well as the preferences and data which is stored by many other KDE applications such as Kopete and Akregator.
