KDE 4 sucks

Thu Nov 27, 2008 8:25 am
KDE 4 sucks.. big time
It is much harder to use, the kicker menu is unnecessarily complicated. I also think there is a lot of wasted spaced in application windows, and complete chaos in the way buttons are arranged, specially in Dolphin
Check this image:
That big empty space is good for placing ads.

anyway, I am entitled to my personal opinion..

You can configure the toolbar to your own needs. I like the way the buttons are arranged. If you don't you can change it.

You could put the Information panel below the places panel and you can put the text right beside the icons in the toolbar.

Cheers, m

Change your toolbar to use "text alongside icons" by right-clicking the grabber thing and stick another bookmark in your places. No empty space then.

Edit: Beaten my mere seconds. =<

thats your personal opinion.. my dolphin looks like this...
http://flexible.xapient.net/wp-content/ ... simple.jpg
or that...
http://flexible.xapient.net/wp-content/dolphin.jpg
no space for adds...
(that depends..)

the whole desktop environement sucks because you don't need the space provided for additional features?
also... in my opinion the plasma panel menu is way more intuitive than the cascaded oldfashioned windows style menus of the former kicker.. mouse over, dragndrop, pull and finished.. perfect.. why should i define the panel height in px when i can pull it to the target height..

EDIT: oh.. you meant "kickoff" *gg* i thought you were talking about the panel menu.. sorry! yeah.. kickoff is..hmm.. i don't know.. i use it.. as it works together with the panel.. you may try lancelot.

it looks a little better, but the lack of separating lines in the UI confuses me. I am used to visually grouping related UI components together with a help of a surrounding box or separating line.. but with KDE 4, everythign seems to be just spat on the screen..

for example, look at the text:
- Desktop > KDE 4...
it is lost in the cluttered UI. there is no visual emphasis on it..
- quickaccess.jpeg (in the bottom of the window). Is that supposed to be a status bar? what is it? i see it like a text field thrown randomly on the screen. How does the disk usage bar (that shows 10.6GB free) relates -visually- to its location? it would seem randomly placed.

I know i can customize the look and feel.. but the photo i sent is the starting look and feel... and IMO, it is a disaster.

So is this guy:

And he loves the new GUI :)
Well, KDE cannot make everyone happy by default. Perhaps you will find the gui more appealing if you use another theme, in stead of Oxygen.

As far as I know, the new default for toolboxes in KDE4 is 'Text Alongside Icons'.

i guess i must get to used to it fast. I am using Fedora 8, and wouldn't go to Fedora 9 or 10 because of KDE 4. But soon Fedora 8 will drop out of support... life is tough

Yes KDE 4.1 sucks, but if you try the KDE 3.1, you will see that KDE 4.1 sucks less than KDE 3.1.

KDE series seems to have the first public release version with x.3 series. and that is the case: KDE 3.3 is far better than KDE 3.1.

I'm looking forward to see KDE 4.3, if KDE is still KDE, the 4.3 should give a decent desktop environment for this planet.

I'm sorry to hear that.

thjen use the classic menu instead.

I also think there is a lot of wasted spaced in application windows, and complete chaos in the way buttons are arranged, specially in Dolphin
Check this image:

Shoulc every square-centimeter in app-windows be filled with buttons, widget, scrollbars and other gizmos?

That said, the buttons in Dolphin might be spaced further apart, making it easier to hit individual buttons, and taking better advantage of the available space.

anyway, I am entitled to my personal opinion..

Sure :)

why don't you make a proposal how it should look instead of just bragging?

To offer a contrarian view: What I hated in KDE3 was the fact that there were lines, borders and separators everywhere. Everything was framed, some things were double-framed. The UI looked cluttered and busy.

KDE4 looks much cleaner. Is it perfect? Of course not. But we are still at the very beginning of KDE4's developement-cycle.

How does the disk usage bar (that shows 10.6GB free) relates -visually- to its location? it would seem randomly placed.

Where would you place it instead?

IMO, it's not a disaster. This just goes to show that you can't please everyone.

Yes, that's the status bar. Because it shows a status. Of the currently selected object. And because it roughly has the shape of, heck, I don't know - a bar? Umm.

And I'd guess the disk usage is displayed there, because once you've moved your eyes from the main content section of the application to that status bar, chances are pretty dandy that you're interested in statistical information. Or so one would think. Except you it seems. So... as others have asked: how'd you do it?

My personal opinion is that if people create threads with offensive/controversal/insulting subject titles then people should just ignore it. It's insulting to the developers who do the work, they deserve better as do we users.

Totally agree. KDE developers are largely volunteers, and their contribution is extremely valued, and quite many with whom I have closely worked with are amazing individuals. :)
And anyway, I love KDE4.x personally, and I consider these kind of threads as rant.
