where is 4.6.1?

Tue Mar 01, 2011 4:58 pm
Does anyone know where the 4.6.1 release is? It's supposed to be out today, but I can't find any mention of it. There are some bugs I really want fixed, and it supposedly contains a lot of fixes, so I've been looking forward to it.

It could come out any time today. When it says "March 1st", it doesn't mean "March 1st at 12:01 am UTC", it means "some time during the day of March 1st in any time zone". And your distribution may take another few days to get packages.

Yeah, if only we didn't love KDE so much. D: I'm really looking forward to seeing a full bug-fix list just to retest and make sure they're all really fixed, as well as appreciate them to death. I swear, before I found KDE I didn't care about a good 3/4 of what my computer could do.

I just hope crash on logout/shutdown will be fixed...

Edit: Ahh, yes!

That's the big one for me. A fix was committed, so I expect the bug to be gone in 4.6.1.

As others have noted, there's still no mention of 4.6.1 on KDE's news page (where other monthly releases have been announced). So I guess KDE's release schedule is even looser than TheBlackCat suspected.

I'm not involved with the release team, so I'm speaking as an ordinary developer here.

The schedule is not usually that flexible, especially for minor releases.

But we're in a svn->git transition which until completed will make a living nightmare to the release team and packagers. My guess that it is the main reason for delaying 4.6.1.

ivan,

Thanks for the response; that does sound unpleasant (although I do think git is nicer than svn, so I hope that pays off in the long run). It's good to have input from someone with more knowledge of the situation.

Could you let us know if you do hear any inside info from the release team? I've skimmed a couple mailing lists and haven't gleaned anything.

So how long is the svn->git migration supposed to take? It seems like the move started in Q3-Q4 last year and is still going?

@lnmaurer

you could try asking on IRC. #kde - maybe someone there knows the plans

@airdrik

Well, it is not as simple as just converting the repos. We needed (and still need) to agree upon a new workflow, new naming scheme for branches/tags etc. (there's no point in GIT if we were to use it as we used SVN)

Currently, only a few parts of KDESC* were moved to GIT - kdelibs, kdebase (now in 4 different repos), kdeplasma-addons and parts of some other modules (each part in its separate repo). But a lot of projects are still in SVN.

The problem that the release team has (from my POV) is that since GIT is no longer one big repository like it was the case before, but a number of smaller ones - you can't just go and tag the whole KDESC's source tree as 4.6.1. but they need to come up with something new...

This is the most I can say since, as I said, I'm not at all involved in the release management :)

Thanks for the info guys!! I have been waiting for it too. I simply can't find it, now I know why. I will just wait further.

I hope the delay is not because of KDEPIM. Btw, it will be released with 4.6.1, right?

The latest news - 4.6.1 packages are being prepared, tested for binary compatibility etc.

As for KDEPIM, I have no idea. I've been using it (the akonadi-based one) for a rather long time now, so I haven't really followed the news about the official release. :)
