As it turned out, there's a newer version of the plugin, I guess he had re-written it, but there is some missing functionality, so it's even less usable than the old one. So for now I will just use Krita for backgrounds and matte paintings (which it is quite good for)

Hi,
sorry that I dig up this old thread.
But a friend wants to use Krita for animations and I found this thread regarding the animator plugin.

Does anyone know whether this plugin is still compatible with the current Krita version, and if it is, is it really usable?

Doesn't seem to work much at all anymore. I couldn't get it to do much in 2.4, doubt it works in 2.5 either. Probably a dead plugin at this point, as the author seems to have vanished off the face of the earth.

On the other hand, what the plugin in its two versions does is show that it is possible to build an animation system on top of Krita. Now we only have to finish it :-) But, frankly, that will take some time and a seriously interested developer.

If I get more time later this Fall I may revisit the plugin. The biggest issue is going to have a usable timeline, if I recall it was not at all intuitive in how it should work. If the timeline isn't functional and easy to use, it kind of makes it not fun to do animation. Or maybe instead of a timeline we do the more traditional X-Sheet?

It would be fantastic if you got the time to work on this Brett!
I'd like an traditional x-sheet. It's a well tried and proved solution that works well.

Is there animation software that provides x-sheet instead of timeline?

From what I remember, Retas animation suite (the japanese reference… ) use only a traditional x-sheet and has no timeline.
(more infos here: http://www.celsys.co.jp/en/products/ret ... tures.html )

Digicel Flipbook does, and so does TVPaint Pro (although default in TVPaint is to use the timeline).

Sorry for disappearing, but I'm back now and will try to continue working on plugin. After updating to current master, several things got broken, but at some point it does work: creating layers/frames, playing, lighttable.

Wonderful! I started taking a look at the code last week but didn't touch anything.

Thanks for returning

I just want you to know that I think this is a very important project for open source animation. It's huge. It will allow people to make all kinds of animation with just open source. Cut out, 3D, vector, all has pretty good tools (especially 3D), but painterly animation is not very possible with the current Open Source line-up.
