Temporary replacement for k3b

Post Thu Feb 05, 2009 8:24 pm

Hi,
could you please suggest some good CD and DVD burning application I can use as a temporary replacement for k3b until k3b becomes somehow stable :-(
I don't want to install kde3.5 version of k3b as I don't want to have any part of kde3.5 installed.

Well, as there is no Qt4/KDE4 CD&DVD burning application available yet (at least that I know of), you have three options:
1. Use some gtk based app, like GnomeBaker or Brasero, and install gtk (and Gnome) deps with it.
2. Use good old K3b and install some KDE3 deps with.
3. Use command line tools, and earn the title "geek of the month". ;)

Me, personally, wouldn't change K3b for anything, even if it is KDE3. Well, it works. It works great, to be precise. One of those apps that made me switch to GNU/Linux back then...

If you keep gtk/gnome libs installed, I would say your best bet is Brasero. Or Nero if you don't mind using a proprietary app.

Still, I would love it if KDE would be able to get the ability to use Dolphin and/or Konqueror to just drag-and-drop files to a specific place to burn them.

You could try NeroLinux or xcdroast or graveman(devel stoped in 2006)

or

Do it all with shell scripts cause all k3b is a frontend to cdrecord, wodim, cdrdao, and growisofs

or

google gui frontends for the particular backend you want to use.

If you want to do burning your choices are probably to either install some gnome dependencies or install some KDE 3 dependencies. You are most likely going to have to pick one or the other, you are not going to be able to stick to a "clean" KDE 4-only installation. Given that is the case, you might as well just go with the old version of k3b. I can understand wanting to avoid KDE 3, I would like to as well, but if avoiding KDE 3 means you have to install gnome instead, you really don't gain anything by avoiding KDE 3 do you?

Thank you for your hints. Currently I have anyway something from GTK/Gnome installed as there are GTK applications I cannot live without - like Gimp or Easytag (yes, I know there is Kid3 but...). So currently I am thinking about xcdroast or burn-cd (commandline frontend written in Python) as for both I have all dependencies installed.

By the way work on KDE4 version of K3B has just restarted, just take a look at websvn and Mandriva 2009.1 beta 1 announcement:

S.Trueg and L.Montel are both Mandriva employees.

This is excellent news. There has been a committing frenzy over the past 24-14 hours. Kudos to the K3b developers.

Great news! So I think that until it is finished I stay with commandline burning, because there is nothing as good and intuitive for usage as K3b ;-)

Yep, Sebastian Trüg had been busy working on nepomuk. It seems now he's concentrating on k3b.
