Feedback and ideas

Mon Jan 24, 2011 6:01 pm
Greetings.

Excellent software, I really like using this. Now i'm cataloging everything I have. ;D

Some issues have raised:

Video database:
- _Cast_ won't get imported from animenfo.
- There are alot of data that doen't get imported, like composer. (not just animeinfo, but imdb too)

Video Game database:
- The Platform field doen't have SNES, NES or arcade, etc? My collection is all about old stuff. With the current system I can't even type the SNES (Super Nintendo) in Tellico.

running version 2.3.1, just got it today. It fixed a lot of things ;)

Great!

The best way to get those fixed is to file bugs and mention specifically which data source and which information, along with an example search and test case, if you don't mind.

I'll go ahead and check animenfo and composer from IMDb.

Just open up the field editor and add those systems as additional choices for the Platform field! Separate the options with a semi-colon.

How about adding mobygames as a source? It has credits. It would be nice to have these as movies do.

I did some testing and found out that if I add 4 image fields, the 4th doesn't display. Is this a bug or a feature? nevermind. I titled the field img:media and it was conflicting with some namespace. I deleted that and made new one and now this works too.

I prefer to add sources which have APIs, rather than try to read websites. Scraping is always so fragile, and I prefer sources that have made their data more easily and clearly available. Try the Freebase and Giant Bomb sources and see if they might help you out.

Odd. The field editor should sanitize the name so that there would be no conflict. I can check that.

first of all, I would also like to thank you Robby for this great software. (I use it extensively for several databases, music, video, books).

I'm actually missing one feature that you could somehow compare with amarok/digikam functionnality. Inside a DB entry, I wish you could enter the path to your file if you have it on your harddrive (ebooks, movie, mp3 ...). This path could be manually entered like an "open" function. (or automatically, see later).

This "path" could be activated by a "launch" button inside the main window entry to load / view / launch your file. It would be kind of great to be able to launch your file with your prefered video/pdf/audio software (kde preferences) just looking at tellico so you don't have to open dolphin or anything else. I often miss this to get a preview of the file while reading for description or so ... Therefore I always have to open my dolphin and search my Harddrive to launch the file.

You could also imagine to define a DB folder (a bit like amarok and/or Digikam) and tellico would fetch the entries and associate them to the DB so that you stay updated. You could also imagine to tag the files according to a pattern define with the tellico information.

I know the last part of the idea is a bit tricky but the first part might be easy. Do you think it would be possible for you to implement this ? I tried to customize a button but I'm afraid I'm not so skilled as you are. :<

I may be misunderstanding what you mean, but you can add a URL field to your collection in Tellico. And the Editor will show an "Open" button so you can choose a local file, if you like. In the viewer, it shows up as a clickable link.

For ebooks in a book collection, your idea has been on my "To Do" list for a while. Tellico can read file metadata for the File Catalog collection already, I'd just need to connect that to the Book Collection type. And then set it up to watch a directory, for example, as you say. One of these days, perhaps I'll have the time. :)

Hi,

In fact, you're right. I thought this was only for internet links ;-) my mistake then. Just one question, how do you customize the appearance ? (for instance, the "Buy by amazon" is set at one place I didn't find).

For the rest of the idea, nice if you had this idea too ! perhaps one day you've time.

The Amazon link is hard-coded in the tellico-common.xsl file. You can edit that if you like...

Ok, so it means to customize the "output" text, I can re-use the code you have hardcoded for the amazon. oki doki.

Thanks a lot for all your answers and your time.

Thank you for Tellico, I am trying to switch our small school from Windows to Linux (mint) and Tellico just might enable me to do this further. I migrated our school library from an ancient, custom built program on a kaput computer to Tellico, and it works much better and simpler, except for one missing feature:

I need a label printer function for spine labels. When I enter new books into the library, I need to somehow be able to make a print list to print labels with two field inputs (authors' name and location code) as well as our school name. (On standard Avery label sheets)

Thank you for your hard work, and for considering my request.

Tellico basically uses HTML for printing, and I don't know if that's suitable for exact position for labels and such. I suppose it's possible, I don't have an avery HTML template at the moment, though.

I'm not a programmer, but if there were some way of easily outputting the data to a csv file or some other file type, I could probably figure out how to format it so that I can print it using Calc or something. Or perhaps if it output to a generic label template, I might be able through trial and error to get it customized for the labels we use. What do I need to study to be able to do this? HTML coding? Thanks.

Hi,

I've been bitten by Tellico and still make my Tellico colletion bigger and bigger. But even now I feel lack of one feature: highlighting while searching. It's important when e.g. comments to books are long (I use it to keep table of contents). When I'm searching books with a text of Mark Summer, I'll find all books with "summer" in comment (not only that Summer). And it'd be easier to find the title of his text in long comment.

Thank you for Tellico! :)

You can export to CSV (File->Export).

Sure, I can add that to my rather long list of desired improvements! ;D I haven't had much time to lately to work on making the list shorter, unfortunately...
