Migrating from KMail 1

Tue Mar 12, 2013 1:55 am
Hi,

I am migrating from KMail 1 to KMail 2. Almost all went well. I even imported my filters. :)

Two remaining challenges:

1. Accounts did not migrate. The Identities did. Is there a way to do this? I suppose I can manually add the accounts but would be much nicer if I could migrate them programmatically. :)

2. No recipient list. Specifically, I never used kaddressbook/kontact. My mail needs are simple and I always used the Recent Addresses widget in KMail 1. That seems gone in KMail2. I manually copied the Recent Addresses from kmailrc [General] to the new kmail2rc file but still nothing shows when I use the Select button --- the Select Recipients dialog is empty. I have no need for a complicated contact or address book, but am I now forced to use kaddressbook?

Thanks. :)

Edit: Using KDE 4.10.1 on Slackware 14.0. :)

With respect to my Accounts not migrating, I recreated them manually.

From what I understand about addresses in KMail, seems like when I press the Select button I should see both a listing for a Default Address Book, but anything else I choose to populate the list. I saw the conversation in this older thread, which led me to the wiki, which indicates my problem probably has something to do with akonadi.

When I opened System Settings->Personal Information, I noticed the Default Address Book is pointed to $HOME/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf. The wiki says don't use that file. The file is zero bytes on my system anyway.

Yet I still haven't figured out how to display Recent Addresses, which is all I really need or want right now.

Thanks. :)

Still troubleshooting the contacts problem. From what I understand, when I choose the Select button I should see something like this:

=====================
Select Recipient
=====================
Search ________________
=====================
All
Default Address Book <- This appears but can't do anything
Distribution Lists
Recent Addressess <- This does not appear and this is what I want
Selected Recipients
=====================
<Add as To> <Add as CC> <Add as BCC> <Cancel>

Help appreciated! :)

I believe recent addresses are stored in the old configuration files, which shouldn't have been deleted. Can you check them? Also check .kde[4]/share/apps/kmail (which is the old kmail dir).

Yes, the Recent Addresses key is populated in both the old kmailrc and new kmail2rc files. The addresses are there and do work. When I start typing in the To: text field, KMail starts trying to auto match the address. Second, I can open the full list by opening the context menu in the To: text field and selecting the Edit Recent Addresses menu option.

When I use the Select button all I see is "Default Address Book." Using the Select button in KMail1 worked fine and I saw the Recent Addresses. Here is a snapshot:

Select Recipient screen shot

Thanks. :)

I'm not sure if it is a regression or by design, simply because I didn't use the feature often. I just checked and it only shows contacts as well here.

I'm unsure what I did but now the Select Recipient dialog is empty. :(

Did you check whether the address book is enabled?

I checked System Settings, Personal Information. and found nothing related. I created a new Personal Contacts item, pointed to ~/.local/share/contacts. Thereafter KMail2 showed Personal Contacts in the Select Recipients dialog but not any of the Recent Addresses.

I never have used kaddressbook or kontact. I have always been content with the simple Recent Addresses list in KMail1 as I don't have any enterprise needs. Thus at this point I do not have anything in the Personal Contacts.

I filed a bug report against the Select Recipient dialog:
