The command "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental" causes the KDE System Configuration Cache (the Sycoca) to be rebuilt. This stores information such as the applications and plugins present on the system, a list of all mimetypes and associated applications and other crucial data. To the best of my knowledge it will not affect Catfish - or any other non-KDE application.

The messages which kbuildsycoca4 printed out can be ignored - they are merely XDG specification compliance warnings.

As for making Dolphin use the appropriate file associations, this can be done through (KDE) System Settings > File Associations. If you do not have (KDE) System Settings installed, then please run "kcmshell4 filetypes". MP3 files should have the mimetype "audio/mpeg".

Good to know the output is harmless, thanks 8)
I found mpeg too.
Now it's time for me to read kfind's documentation before dropping catfish.

if you have a large collection you really want a player with some kind of data base and query process, not just for speed but for access to mp3 tags. if you want to keep using VLC then you might look at search indexers like nepomuk as a way to index your collection

My problem with the enormous amount of music files is that I keep shifting files (mp3+flac+wav+ogg) and directories; always indecisive about a good way to order dirs and in what genre to put files.
I'll definitely check out Amarok also. About tags - I'm not aware of what I can do with tagging in Dolphin yet; another thing I'll have to explore.
KDE still has many mysteries for me 8)

tagging - lots of taggers out there, Dolphin not one of them

for single albums I like Kid3, for mass tagging either puddletag or easytag and Amarok can do tagging inc. musicbrainz lookup

Not Dolphin? In Dolphin I see a column "tags" and can add tags to folders and files (also has to do with nepomuk, if I remember well).
Type of tagging that'd interest me most is personal ones.
I like to add tags and complete comments like "usually in key of F, but band X plays in F#" or "learn chords and bassline".

my bad - I don't have Nepomuk enabled so didn't see it but you are correct, if you use Nepomuk make sure the tags can get embedded in the files not just the Nepomuk db (no use so have no idea how it works, but I think comments get written to Nepomuk not the music file)

Exactly why I don't tag much; haven't found a way to "attach" tags/comments to the file itself and read them in different apps.

for mp3's there is a comment field in the id3v standard and most taggers should support and embed it in the mp3 file including Amarok
