Global (all users) KDE configuration tools

Hello All,

I am trying to find a tool to manipulate KDE settings globally for all users of the system. I am more experienced with gnome which has gconftool to handle this type of thing and from what Google tells me there is no similar tool in KDE.

For a simple example - I would like to set up the system so that the screen locks after 15 minutes idle for any user (existing or to be created) by default.

Currently running RHEL5 (kde3) and RHEL6 (kde4). It would be nice if there is a solution for both, but primarily concerned with KDE4. I read a little bit about kreadconfig and kwriteconfig, but I haven't been able to find anything that lists what possible keys there are to modify. I see various people specifying local files (in their own home directory) and using seemingly random key names but I can't figure out what where a system-wide config file exists much less my key options available. Is there a sane method for using these tools or a decent tutorial (since the manpage is of little help)?

Or am I stuck with managing these things on a per-user basis? If so, is there a command line tool I can use to manipulate these settings for the specified user (kwriteconfig?) so that I can automate this process?

Thanks in advance!

This may be that for which you seek: http://www.compiz.org/

Thing is, there's a truly excellent, but mostly ignored for vendor built-in things, unified desktop control app that works for RH via a (Apache v2.x) browser interface, and I can't recall its name. It's very like the CUPS http://localhost:631 app, but does far more. Maybe someone else may recall...

I would suggest looking into KDE's Kiosk framework. While an application existed to help administrators configure this under KDE 3, no such alternative exists under KDE 4 unfortunately.

However, the actual underlying infrastructure which enforces Kiosk restrictions is very much still alive in KDE 4, so it can be used. I would suggest searching on KDE Techbase (techbase.kde.org) for more information concerning Kiosk.
