How to install KDE 4.2 on Debian Lenny

Thu Feb 05, 2009 2:12 am
Hello, I installed KDE 4.2 on Lenny system recently by apt-pinning Sid and Experimental and have not encountered any problems at all so far. I just couldn't wait until Lenny released.
I was surprised that KDE 4.2 runs quite quickly and seems to work great!

Anyways i was looking through some posts on a few forums and saw that there were some people out there that wanted to install KDE 4.2 on their Debian testing systems but were unable too do so because KDE 4.2 requires Sid.
So i wrote a guide on how i installed KDE 4.2 on my blog in case anybody out there wants KDE 4.2 but doesn't know how to do it without upgrading.

This is just for Debian

Here's the link

http://linuxsaga.com/guide/kde-42-in-de ... ting-lenny

hope you guys enjoy KDE 4.2 as much as i am right now
:shade:

Any Debian "noob" -users who follows the above instruction:
please remember that you are installing testing and EXPERIMENTAL packages. This means you must be ready for unexpected results and broken package depencies (even unusable system is most unlucky cases).

stickied, thank you alot for posting the instructions. However I would appreciate if you could write a warning like "please proceed with caution, I hope you know what you are doing" :-D

A guide about installing KDE 4.2 on Debian which made by Debian KDE Team:
The Debian KDE maintainers website

Be careful, you're installing experimental packages here too.

Theres nothing bad with unstable and experimental packages :) is just frustrating when a dependency doesn't exist and you need it to upgrade something that doesn't work :P used Sid since I started to use Linux then changed Kubuntu after 4 yrs...

Shouldn't someone modify the title of this topic as Lenny isn't Testing any more ?

My experience with KDE 4.2 was pleasant up to the point of setting up the printer (Brother MFC-490CW). The problem arose after confirming the drivers were installed & cups recognized the printer but, for an unknown reason, KDE returned the printer's status as 'idle' or 'not available'. I cannot determine if the problem was on 'Arch Linux' side or KDE. Yes.. I blacklisted the usb (MODULES)in /etc/rc.conf. Still... no results.

After a day and a half I was tired and determined it was best to fallback to Windows-Vista/64(Business).

I believe my next attempt will be accomplished after installing Oracle's VMware (set-up a virtual machine with Windows as my primary O/S) and then proceed to either Debian 5.0 or Slackware 13.

I understand a majortiy of the PC's run some form a Windows O/S & it's not difficult to understand the reason why, for this is a fact. The Redmond Wash. Co. makes virtually everthing operational with a few 'clicks' of the mouse.

Don't think I've given up on the Linux O/S. I will take another crack at it in the near future.

John T.
