RE: How can i install a Kde 4.2 beta System
Could you check for the existence of the following files?
If you use GStreamer then exchange xine for gstreamer.
- Code: Select all
/lib/kde4/plugins/phonon_backend/phonon_xine.so
/share/kde4/services/phononbackends/xine.desktop
If you use GStreamer then exchange xine for gstreamer.

Does anyone else has the problem of missing menu entries and no text in its place?

I have the same problem, "Favorites" and "Computer" seem to work, but I have NOTHING listed under "Applications" on the kick-off menu. If I log back into 4.1.3 all my apps are back, but there are none in 4.2.
On a side note, Alt-F2 won't bring up the run dialog either. I have to manually change the keyboard shortcut, and then if I change it back to default it will work again.

By menu entry I meant dolphin menu. I have no problem with K Menu.

Oops, my bad... I do get the "no text" on the Dolphin menus also.

The Neon packages are a bit buggy. A machine takes a KDE trunk snapshot and craps it out, so a human is not involved in the process. (Other than the one who wrote the script in the first place
) I would recommend using the official Kubuntu packages (which does not have either of these problems) for actually using KDE 4.2, and neon for checking out new features as they arrive in trunk.

I have only kde.so in the location /opt/kde4-nightly/lib/kde4/plugins/phonon_backend/phonon_xine.so

I am not surprised that you cannot open Multimedia in System Settings then, since there is no Phonon backend. Can you hear any sound notifications? I believe they require a Phonon backend.
I would recommend asking the neon people why a Phonon backend is not included.

RE: How can i install a Kde 4.2 beta System
Kubuntu packages for 4.2 beta1 finally available on the experimental repository:
- Code: Select all
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-experimental/ubuntu intrepid main
RE: How can i install a Kde 4.2 beta System
But if I install from kubuntu-experimental will they over write my existing kde 4.1.3. I do not want that to happen since kde 4.2 is still i beta and may contain bugs which might affect my work
