"KDEInit could not launch" for Dolphin Folders on Desktop

I can't click folders on my desktop as it produces error ="KDEInit could not launch 'xxx/dir/xxx'.".

The problem started after a few weeks ago with a beta patch before 4.8 come out today. Not sure how to fix. I though release of 4.8 would fix the problem.

Maybe this has something to do with Dolphin taking charge of folder types.

I experience the same - suggest you make a bug report

Just to be clear these are individual folders created when you drag a folder to the desktop and select icon in the popup menu?

a quick fix for existing icons but will need to be done for all folder icons on the desktop.

right click the icon -> icon settings -> application -> command the command will be path/to/folder, change it by adding dolphin to the beginning ie: dolphin /path/to/folder

OpenSuse 13.1 x64, KDE 4.12.x

Yep. dragged onto folder-view and when I click the icon for the folder it fails. Icons for calculator work in same process.

thanks. I guess that's a temp-fix, not fixing the context of directories to opening dolphin.

Hi, I just upgraded to 4.8 and I'm having the same problem. I can't launch any directory in my panel. Not even shortcuts to files. And in everything, in Location it says: /home/myuser/.local/share/applications and that shouldn't be.

I hope this gets fixed soon, otherwise I'll have to downgrade to 4.7. :(

* I apologize in advance for my english!

Can you please provide a screenshot of the properties window? It seems that the way Plasma works these shortcuts may have changed breaking the old method.

I am having the same message within dolphin since Kubuntu upgrade to KDE 4.8 . I did first notice it with file launching icons on the Plasma desktop.

I have two file icons on the desktop.
One works.
Screen capture of info: http://runeman.org/kde/Kinit-Plasma1.png
...
The other does not, even after trying several times to recreate the icon.
Screen capture: http://runeman.org/kde/Kinit-Plasma2.png

The information for the two icons is not the same. The tab options are not the same for the two files.

The first file appears to be either the actual file - or a symbolic shortcut to it. This is done at the file system level (usually with ln -s - KDE allows you to make them too though I think)

The second file appears to be a *.desktop based shortcut. These cannot point at actual files - they must point at executables - which will then open the actual file.

With the first file, Plasma will use the File Associations system to find out which app to launch - then execute it. With the second file, Plasma simply asks KDEInit to run the file directly - which fails.

They both formerly worked as a way to launch the file (in LibreOffice) from the "desktop". One broke with 4.8. The other didn't. I think both were created by dragging icon from folder to Plasma workspace.

Working with the earlier "fix" from globalmod, I was able to modify the icon properties.
In Application tab - Command line, I inserted soffice /path/to/file where it formerly said just path/to/file to make the file launch the correct application (LibreOffice)

It gets even more weird. Now the other file (B) won't launch. I now get a KDEInit message that file A won't launch. Something has mixed them together. File B won't even launch by a click from a dolphin window. The only way I can launch it is to start LibreOffice and File/Open it or use "soffice path/to/file", which command is too long to be practical for long paths.

--- Next:
Go to the File B icon settings. Click the wrench to the far right where it says: " Type: OpenDocument Spreadsheet" which reveals a list "Application Preference Order". When I looked, it gave a list:

LibreOffice Calc
KSpread
Ark
Comix

I decided to try. I added soffice which I typed into the blank that was made available when I clicked the Add button.

Apparently LibreOffice Calc isn't a proper choice, somehow, with KDE 4.8. With "soffice" at the top of the preference order, a click on the icon launches the correct file (in LibreOffice Calc).

Can somebody tell me what bug # this discussion fits, Maybe adding these notes there will help point to the bug fix.

Can you please try launching "Libreoffice Calc" from the menu and see if that works?

Also, try running "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental" to try and fix the Libreoffice launching issue.

bcooksley,

My Office Application Menu does not list LibreOffice Calc.
If I enter LibreOffice in the Search blank, Calc gets listed, but without an icon, and clicking it does not launch. I get the same KDEInit failure popup box.

By contrast, LibreOffice Writer, which has an icon, is listed along with other LibreOffice components with icons. LibreOffice Writer does launch from the menu.

LibreOffice Calc does not launch from Krunner, either, while LibreOffice Writer does launch.

Here's the output of running kbuildsycocoa --noincrement

The LibreOffice Calc still does not launch from the menu.
Thanks.

This explains why the previously working Calc document no longer launches from the desktop, and had to have soffice prepended to it to launch.

If you open Dolphin (or use Folder View) is Calc launched for documents opened from there?

As for fixing the issue of Calc being missing from the menu, try having a look at ~/.local/share/applications to see if there are any files named similar to what one would expect for Calc, and remove them if present.

No. To launch the file from Dolphin required that I add soffice above LibreOffice Calc in the preferred application list of the file properties.

.local/share/applications (Sorry, column spacing from konsole doesn't show below. wine-extension-xxx is a separate column

It looks like only one libreoffice-calc.desktop listing exists. I don't actually understand it. There isn't a visible desktop file for libreoffice-calc.

Even though I have thrown away all the earlier desktop icons, (ATR-Activity-6 remains), they are all listed in the applications folder.

What does that tell us, if anything?
Should the listings for the non-existent desktop files be removed?

I've also doen a couple of cat examinations.
cat soffice.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Exec=soffice
MimeType=application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.spreadsheet;
Name=soffice

Type=Application

One that didn't work and no longer exists on screen.

Try examining the content of libreoffice-calc.desktop. It may contain Exec or Hidden entries which are causing the breakage. If it does, try removing it and then running "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental" (ignoring the output of this command).
