Zander, I have the same problem (see here), but I have a 24" display at 1920x1200. The monitor can not get much bigger!
I read the bug, but (and no offense intended) why does it work with OO and more specifically, why does it work with the system fonts and not with others?

Am I missing something? 75% -- 200%
In fact, I prefer how KWord looks at 75%... OpenOffice is too, "hard".

WYSIWYG or not, Kword is simply not usable in its current state.
It's hard to believe that nobody did detect this bug earlier in the dev process.

Re: Is it me or is KWord's font rendering really awful?
I'm thinking of switching my company over to KDE and I looked at my friend's install. I gotta say, the fonts are absolutely terrible. Makes me consider gnome vs xfce instead.
Re: Is it me or is KWord's font rendering really awful?
Just because KWord has bad fonts is not a reason to not switch use KDE. OpenOffice's Qt4 integration is pretty decent.

For those who get the bug :
go to System settings > Appearance > Fonts.
Set Anti-aliasing to "Enabled".
Click the "Configure..." button and disable Hinting.
Here the fonts were awful, now the rendering is great.
For more information, read the blog comments here.

Setting hinting as "slightly" instead of full disabling it also helped here.

Re: Is it me or is KWord's font rendering really awful?
I think it's hard enough in a linux system to get perfect fonts at global system level and for gtk applications at the same time, but it is feasible after some headaches and weeks of investigation.
Now, if it is requested to decrease global quality level to sligthly increase font quality in Kword, which is a specific problem of Kword, it looks like something is wrong.
If the problem is specific to Kword, Kword should solve its own problem, sometimes called "feature".
=> Current situation at my side
This is my 3 cents.

Re: Is it me or is KWord's font rendering really awful?
Maybe the solution described here http://slangkamp.wordpress.com/2009/09/ ... rendering/ helps.
Re: Is it me or is KWord's font rendering really awful?
Try yourself the supposed "solution" to make your own opinion, without decreasing global system font quality.
The user will not look for "help" (to be proved), but for the solution to have perfect fonts, easy to read without effort.
