WOW at KOffice2.0

Wed Apr 08, 2009 9:37 pm
I'm using Arch with KDEmod, and it provided us with KOffice2.0.
And I must say that now for first time I feel confident enough with KOffice that
I'm thinking to switch from OOo to KOffice.

Just one question:
Why have you decided to have why have you decided to put "toolbars"on the side instead of conventional on top?
While writing this I did experiment with it, and I got a bit lost among all the options, but still.
Very nice!

Thanks for the kind words, but be cautious. If you haven't read the release candidate announcenment yet, then please do so. In short, it is not yet aimed at the productive end user.

If you mean by "toolbars" the toolbox at the left, well that is probably standard for at least graphics applications.

Thanks for the warning!

Well isn't KWord more of a writing application like OOo Writer or MS Office Word?

We share as much code as possible between applications so they look broadly similar. Other than that you are free to move the toolbox around to where you like.

From what I remember reading, the horizontal space is generally plentiful (when you edit documents, there's usually a lot of empty space on each side) while many people, especially laptop users, lack the vertical space. So, if the toolbox is placed on the side, it's easier to access various items, and more stuff can be put in there because it does not cover up large parts of the document.

I haven't tried KOffice 2 yet (I'll wait until 2.0 is out), but from what I've seen, it's a great idea.

(Edit: Also, KOffice does not need to copy MS Word or OOo. KDE is all about innovation, right? ;))

Being frame-based, KWord has layout capabilities that neither MS Word or OOWriter can manage :-)

Is it possible to move the toolbox to the top, too? Because I couldn't figure out how to do that. And why can't I choose not to display it at all, like it is possible with the other "toolboxes" at the right?

Sure you can move it around like other dock windows. Hiding is not possible because we implemented it like that. ;-) Probably because users might accidently close the toolbox without knowing how to bring it back afterwards.
