no sound, from Amarok 2.2 only

Sun Oct 25, 2009 2:36 pm
Amarok 2.2, Debian unstable.

Amarok acts as though it's playing music (i.e. the progress indicator is moving), but there's no sound.

If I go to Settings > Configure Amarok > Playback > Sound system configuration > Configure and test playback there, it works fine-- I get sound. But back in Amarok, there's still no sound.

This happens with ogg, mp3, and flac files, and internet streams. Amarok 1.4 and other applications (e.g. xine) will play these files fine; only Amarok 2 won't play them.

Any help would be much appreciated, since Amarok is unusable to me in its current state.

Thanks,
Andrew.

Well, you should check your Phonon settings. Amarok doesn't handle sound directly but lets Phonon do so. Make sure you have the phonon-backend-xine installed and all the necessary codecs for that backend.

Thanks Mamarok. phonon-backend-xine is installed, and Xine is the preferred backend (in System Settings > Multimedia > Backend). I used to also have the Gstreamer backend installed, but I removed it since it's given me trouble in the past.

As for codecs, I have libxine1 and libxine1-all-plugins installed, and as I said before, mp3, ogg, and flac playback work generally in my other applications, e.g. xine. I'm not sure if there's anything else I'm supposed to do to enable these in phonon-backend-xine-- I wouldn't expect so.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks,
Andrew.

Does Dragon Player work with your media?

pulseaudio is purged-- since a while back, I think.

Yes, it does. Loud and clear-- mp3, ogg.

And you checked the volume slider in Amarok is not down to 0?

You could also try with a new user, to sort out if it's due to your settings.

I checked. It's at 91%.

OK, I just created a new test user. His Amarok plays the same files just fine-- there's sound.

So, that's a useful clue. Now, any ideas for what parts of my settings I should look to for the cause? I could move all of ~/.kde out of the way, but I'd rather not do that.

I tried exiting Amarok, removing all of ~/.kde/share/apps/amarok and ~/.kde/share/config/amarok*, then restarting Amarok. No joy :(

Try removing ~/.kde/share/config/phonodevicesrc and restart KDE.

Check that the same output is on top for all classes of sound (System Settings → Multimedia)?

Also, do you have either a file name ~/.asoundrc or a file named /etc/asound.conf?

Yes, they're all the same ("Sound Fusion CS46xx ()" is at the top of each list).

No, I have neither.

When I have a little time, I can try a binary search on ~/.kde - moving the whole thing aside, then restoring half of it at a time to see when the problem starts. It's a slow procedure, since I have to log out and log back in again each time, and I've gotten inconsistent results from it in the past. But it might find the source of the trouble.

what about ~/.config/kde.org/Phonon-Xine.xine.conf. Try removing it if it exists.

It was there, and I removed it and restarted Amarok. No change.

When you remove something sound related, you should not only restart Amarok, but restart KDE.
