Kmail 2.0.89 is driving me mad

Wed Mar 23, 2011 4:09 pm
Hi

I've installed Mandriva 2011 beta release with KDE 4.6, and i've been here trying to put kmail to work with no luck so far, here is my issues:

--send trought remote smtp (worst problem so far)

i can send trought smtp.gmail.com but this server is slow and it changes my sender adress...
BUT i can't send trought smtpa.netcabo.pt (my main smtp server) despite this server is working fine with older versions of kmail and its proper configured... well, not quite like this, some mails pass:
this has been iluding me... kmail allways says that the mail was sent with sucess (except when i misconfigure the server on purpose) but most of the mails don't reach destiny, no mail is sent at all, but if i attach a jpeg file it works...
just now i've send two mails to a secundary mail box, one is a copy of the other but with a attached jpeg file. onlye the mail with the file reach the destiny.
i'm sorry but i can't explain this any better, it's been driving me insane.

i allready have the Mail Dispatch Agent added in the akonadiconsole.

Also, i allready tryed with a new user with fresh config files and the problem wasn't solved

--x-face

i have a x-face configured to be added to the headers of the mails i sent, but this kmail is not adding the header

--incoming mails don't triger events

well, all my 7 pop3 acounts are working fine except this:
looks like it's not trigering any events, no notification sound despite it's configured in the notifications for incoming mail... and more anoying, it doesn't triger filters:
i have several filters to organize incoming mails and they all work fine if used manualy through kmail menu, but they don't work automatically with reception despite they are configured to do so.

Any help appreciated
Thanks

update:

Just fond out that for a mail to pass it needs size. If i attach a file with 30kb it doesn't reach destiny, but if the attached file has 175kb or more them the mail reaches destiny.

And i repeat, this smtp server is working fine (at this precise moment) if used with the kmail client from kde 4.4 that i have running on other machine.

What on Earth could be causing this?

Thanks

Very unusual. Does your Internet Service Provider implement any form of outbound spam filtering? The messages could be being deleted somehow.

Also, are you sending as text only or HTML mail?

Hi. Every time i setup mail acounts, i test them with small mails like "test - test" that i send between my mail boxes, so i've been doing this for 3 days since i installed this new sistem and none of my tests sent by this system reached destiny. After re-checking my configs over and over and tryied the same server with kmail 1.13 and see it always work fine, i google for it and found a tip about the "mail dispatcher agent" at akonadi console... i went check for that but the agent was there, i removed it and add a new one, reboot the system and still no sending mails. Allready bored at the point of given up, i send one more mail and attached a foto for no reason at all and the wierd appened: the mail got out and reach destiny.
Another verified situation is that if i use the gmail's smtp server all the mails reach the destiny (same of them after 20 minutes, but this is because of this server is very slow)

It looks like this new kmail (or the mail dispatch agent) have some changes in the protocols used that my smtp server rejects... and i'm out of ideas.

Also, are you sending as text only or HTML mail?

Tryed both, no change.

Also, i have a question:

Why are we (users) now forced to use kwallet?

Kmail used to store passwords for pop and smtp acounts on it's own, but now we can only type the password in configuration if there is a wallet up and running, otherwise the text box is desabled.
Those wallets don't work right, for example, if you change user and password of an existing and allready stored acount, kmail looses connection to kwallet saying kwallet is not running, and it fails to store the pass on it's own... after logout and login to a new user session, the old password replaces the new one and we're back to the beguining... we have to delete se password in kwallet manager and restart the session to be able to use the new password...

Please put kmail able to work without kwallet again!

Kwallet fails to much; it's not working, we reboot and it's working again... looks like we're back in Windows :(

Update:

So, i opened an acount in gmx.com... kmail 2.0.89 works fine with mail.gmx.com and smtp.gmail.com, and works badly with my isp's server (smtpa.netcabo.pt). It really looks like it's a problem with my server, except this server ONLY fails with this version of kmail running in this kde 4.6.1.
Kmail 1.13 (kde 4.4.3) and kmail 1.9 (kde 3.?) are working fine with the very same server.

I can't find any kind of configuration this akonadi's mail dispatch agent might have, and i wish that i could "see" what's going on between this agent and my smtp server.

For now i'm gonna to use alternative servers to send mail, too bad those servers must change my sender adress.

Another point:
About the situation of incoming mails don't trigger events like notification and filter execution, is this a known bug that will be corrected in a newer version or is this also only happening to me?
If so, what could be wrong in my system?

Thanks

You can use your existing identities to show the Sender details, but use your gmail smtp account for sending mail. It doesn't affect the display - I use this when away from home.

Hi

Gmail allways change my sender details to my gmail account (i send with sender my_mail@netcabo.pt and it reaches destiny with my_gmail_account@gmail.com), and GMX don't allow a diferent sender from the one that owns the account.

What about the situation with the filters not working?

Thanks

That's very strange. I subscribe to a number of mailing lists, not all of which know my gmail address, so messages with that address would not be accepted by the list, and they are, when I use the gmail smtp. Can you please tell us exactly how you set up your gmail smtp in kmail? I'm not using KMail 2, so I can only compare it with my 1.13.6 setup, but I wouldn't expect the smtp needs to be different.

My working one simply says

[Transport 685147933]
authtype=0
encryption=TLS
host=smtp.googlemail.com
id=99999999
name=Googlemail
port=465

You mean you use that server without autentication?

That server gives me "error: server needs autentication" and if i put autentication (google gmail account) it behaves just like smtp.gmail.com.

And to aid in the wierdiness, i got no response from the server with TLS and 465, only TLS 25, SSL 465.
My ping to smtp.googlemail.com gives 209.85.229.16 , your location must be sending you to a diferent server. Our internet routes are not unified.

Can you give me the IP of your server?

No - sorry, I misled you. I use gmail on my netbook, which travels with me, so I tend not to store usernames and passwords in text files. I would typically use the Configure KMail to add a username at the start of a session, but I still wouldn't save the password, even then. On my home machines it doesn't matter, but it does for a traveling one, I think.

I'm not sure why TLS doesn't work for you. Maybe the locale makes a difference? Different server, different needs? My ping goes to 209.85.143.16

Hi

That server (209.85.143.16) behaves exactly the same way has the others, if you pay attention next time you use it, you'll see that the mail adress you put in your sender will be changed to the adress of your gmail account.
And i still get no response from it using TLS port 465; no encription and TLS works on port 25, and SSL works on port 465 by the standards.
Maybe your older version of kmail is smarter and change this at runtime.

Thanks anyway

Possible, I suppose, but I'm not convinced. FWIW, I just used the netbook to send via gmail smtp, and the message arrived with the correct sender identity.

Please check through the smtp settings in Settings > Configure KMail > Identities > Sending and list absolutely everything here (password obscured, of course) so that we can try to spot the problem.
