Board wide rules

Registering on the KDE Community Forums implies that you agree to the following points and the KDE Code of Conduct.
This forum is your community and we believe that you have a common sense feel for what is appropriate and what not when participating in discussions. We do, however need to have a set of policies for everyone to refer to when the need arises. This article applies to all KDE Community Forum members, including staff, unless mentioned otherwise. These rules also apply to all members who have registered before issuing these policies.


Section 1: Posting

a. Posts should belong to the relevant forum. Repeated posts in the wrong forum will result in deletion of the topic or result in a warning to the poster. Users are asked to search for similar topics before posting a query.

b. Be respectful to all users at all times. Uphold the KDE Code of Conduct when you reply. Attempts to bypass the forum's word censoring system can lead to a ban. If you come across impolite, rude, abusive or harassing posts, feel free to report it to the forum staff.

c. Members should remember that this board is aimed at a general audience. Any pornographic content or generally offensive text is in no way acceptable and can lead to a ban.

d. Members are asked to respect the copyright of other users, sites, media, etc. Users linking to or asking for information on warez, crackz, etc. or re-printing material without permission will receive a warning and their post will be removed.

e. When embedding images using [IMG][/IMG] tags, respect the bandwidth of other users and use smaller sized images. Images should not extend outside the topic wrapper. Posts including images that violate these conventions are liable to be edited/removed.

f. The post text should be consistent with regard to "normal writing". It should not contain excessive UPPERCASE letters, as it seems like shouting. It should also not have excessive punctuation marks (????) or emoticons, large or small coloured text, etc.

g. Topics should have appropriate titles that gives a vague idea of the post. Do not use titles like "Help!!", "Problems...." or "Getting an error".

h. Spam, warez and similar are strictly not allowed under any section of the forum. Any such content will be deleted without notice and the user may receive a warning, or get banned depending upon the context.

i. Please resist the urge to use a sensationalist, extreme, and flame-baiting title like "I've had it with KDE!" "I bet you can't solve my problem" or "KDE sucks". Your problem is important, but so are other people's problems. The best way to get good help is to be specific and unemotional in your original post and its title, as you describe the problem.

j. Please do not execute any command suggested in a post without knowing what it does. Dangerous commands can cause physical system damage, leave it unusable or cause severe loss of data including preferences and documents. Any post persuading use of such commands will result in a permanent ban.

k. Forum staff reserve the right to edit and delete any post anywhere. They are also responsible for issuing warnings to any member when such a situation arises. It is to be remembered that KDE and KDE Community Forums are non-profit organizations/communities run by a team of volunteers. All members of the staff and community are assisting you during their spare time with only your gratitude as compensation. We ask you to consider that when communicating with staff.


Section 2: User profile

a. Avatars: Users can use gallery avatars, remote avatars or upload their own. Uploaded avatars should not exceed 100 KB in size. Avatars should not be larger than 100px X 100px. Avatars should not contain any form of pornographic images. Political images are also prohibited for usage. Animated avatars that appear flashy and become a means of distraction are discouraged and the user can be asked to change/remove the same.

b. Signatures: Signatures can contain up to 5 lines of text, and only one external image of dimensions not more than 60px in height and 470px in width. A signature may not have more than four links including text and the image (if any). Signatures should not contain any form of explicit image, flashy gif animations or advertisements (in the form of text or images). Text sizes should be in between 75% and 100% (small and normal). Text in signatures is subject to the same conditions as posts with respect decency, warez, emoticons, and so forth. Links in the signature are permitted to a maximum of 5 unique pages. They should not point to pages that offer advertisements or adult content.

c. Usernames: Username should not contain any word that violates the KDE CoC in any way. The forum management reserves the right to change the username at any point in case of violation of this policy. Since we allow usernames of different character sets (i.e. in international languages), any report against having words that disrespects the user's community will be removed or changed by the forum management notifying the user about the same.

d. Profile information: User profile information should not have any links pointing to advertisements, adult content, warez, cracks and related content. Profile field data should neither offend any other member of the forum, nor should it be a resource serving any content that may be regarded as flame inducing.

e. Newly registered members cannot make any changes to their profile until they have made one post in any part of the forum. This restriction is added in order to prevent spambots from adding inappropriate text and links to their profile and signature fields.

f. It is recommended that you fill in your "KDE Version" and "OS" profile fields. These fields help other members to localize your problem and attend to them at a faster pace.

g. Any member violating policies 2a and 2b shall be asked to edit their profile and change it in accordance with the above mentioned rules. Further delay in taking action from the member's side will lead to removal of the avatar/signature from the user's profile within 48 hours (from first notification) and a warning, depending upon the intensity of violation. Consistent violation may result in the user losing their avatar/signature privileges.

h. Forum staff are exempted from policies 2a and 2b as they devote their valuable time in managing various aspects of the forum.


Section 3: Private messages

a. All policies drafted under Section 1 apply for private messages as well.

b. Private messages should not be posted publicly without proper permission from the message author (sender). Reported incidents violating this rule will lead to a permanent ban from the KDE Community Forums.

c. Private message harassments should be reported to the forum staff via PMs only. Kindly avoid reporting such events publicly.


Section 4: Legal

a. KDE Community Forums does not take any responsibility for any content posted by a member. All messages belong to their poster and they have the full responsibility for any violation upcoming as a result of their post.

b. All resources developed by the forum staff including code and design are licensed under GNU Public License 3.0. You are free to update, modify or redistribute any software from our repository. KDE Community Forums provides no guarantee for it's software resources and takes no responsibility for loss of data or any other damage to your software due to usage of our code.

c. KDE community forum staff officially includes all members belonging to either of these groups: Administrators, Managers, Community Liaison, Global moderators, Moderators and Idea Moderators. Members of these groups can be identified by their group badges and coloured usernames.

d. The KDE Community Forums are an official member of the KDE family. KDE, "K Desktop Environment", "KDE Community Forums" and the KDE Logo are trademarks or registered trademarks of KDE e.V. in the European Union, the United States and other countries.
