FreeBSD, kde-4.2 and printing

Sun Mar 08, 2009 4:59 pm
Hello,

after install kde-4.2 on FreeBSD-7.1 printing seems to be broken.

Starting okular from a terminal and trying to print gives the lpr usage information, so I assume that the okular somehow messes up the call to lpr.

Anyone else having these problems?

Best regards

KDE requires CUPS, so if it wasn't already install, it will install cups-base. Since cups-base has its own lpr, there can be problems. Here is what I did:

1) install cups-base and cups-pstoraster.

2) Move the FreeBSD lp utilities to new names so they don't get in the way:
mv /usr/bin/lp /usr/bin/lp.org
mv /usr/bin/lpr /usr/bin/lpr.org
mv /usr/bin/lpq /usr/bin/lpq.org
mv /usr/bin/lprm /usr/bin/lpr.morg

3) Set up a printer in cups.

Don't look back! (Or you might see the giants whose shoulders we stand on)

Interesting. I'll look into that.

I don't know if it's relevant or not, but printing from CUPS ( the testpage worked just fine).
