Hello, I am running a KDE 4.2.1 on a fresh install (GENERIC) of FreeBSD 7.1, there seems to be a number of problems.
First is that some programs can't save the result of their work, for example the tool used for finding and adding non-kde apps to the menu finds them alright, but doesn't add them to the menu. The system log viewer says there is no syslog file. The device notifier didn't find a usb flash drive connected, while dmesg did notice it. Strange things happen...

For the USB detection, see this page. Yes, it's a GNOME page, but it's about setting up HAL which applies to KDE too. http://www.freebsd.org/gnome/docs/halfaq.html
As for system logs, you'll need to configure it for FreeBSD. Open up Configure dialog and go to System Log page. Check in /etc/syslog.conf for the various files that syslog might write to.
Don't look back! (Or you might see the giants whose shoulders we stand on)

Thanks, there is also an issue that konsole shuts (I call it from the menu, it starts and then promptly shuts down) itself on a new start of KDE, but after some time it works normally
Shifted through the konsolerc, it looks like this [Desktop Entry] DefaultProfile=Shell.profile [Favorite Profiles] Favorites=/usr/local/kde4/share/apps/konsole/Shell.profile [MainWindow] Height 1024=846 State=AAAA/wAAAAD9AAAAAAAAAzEAAAMyAAAABAAAAAQAAAAIAAAACPwAAAAA Width 1280=817 The 'State' kind of baffles me, and even when deleted it rewrites that parameter, anyone knows what it does?

The state stores the number of tabs, their positions in the window, etc.

Useful info, but doesn't solve any problem...

The problem with konsole is described and solved (well avoided really) here
http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=1067 Perhaps devs should take a look? |
