I know that I'm barred, with the latest code, to use the new OpenGL drawing code in KWin. How can I lift the blocks to test? Catalyst 12.2 is improving, and there is an unofficial bug tracker.

I'd like to report that, unlike past releases that were unmitigated disasters, Catalyst 12.3 is working quite well with KWIN_DIRECT_GL=1. It corrupts the screen when I try to "Configure Window Behavior...", but, apart from that, it works. Fullscreened Flash is watchable with my E-450; it wasn't watchable at all with a normal "kwin" invocation. The "kwin" process CPU usage is 2x what I get with indirect rendering, but that's expected (it gets compensated, also)
There are bugs, but there is a decisive effort being made by the Catalyst team to have it working well with KWin. Maybe you can lift the direct rendering ban with Catalyst 12.5 or 12.6. XvBA works, but I need to disable compositing while in full screen. There are still Catalyst bugs with that. I have the "Tear-free Desktop" disabled, but I don't see any tearing at all. I do see some tearing with a normal "kwin" launch. |

I decided to give this a try, well it works however, as pointed out above, you have to manually suspend desktop effect in full screen. Tried on VLC, Youtube on Firefox(both flash and html5), Steel Storm: Burning Retribution and on Space Pirates and Zombies.
Suspend full screen option from system setting doesn't work. If anyone could help to get full screen to suspend effects automatically would be greatly appreciated. Edit: Some corruption might occur when launching applications that use opengl or switching to full screen. Kubuntu 12.10 64-bit KDE 4.9.3 X server downgraded to version 1.12.4 so I can use fglrx-legacy Updated to Kernel 3.6.3 from Ubuntu archives. |
