Blur effect profiling

Tue Jun 19, 2012 6:51 pm
Hi,
I would like to ask if there's any way to profile Kwin's blur plugin. I'm using it with QtCurve style with transluctent windeco and I must say it's a real resource hog. With one window on the desktop everything moves fast and smooth, but as I open more windows, animation smoothness drops. With around seven windows opened simultaneously the performance drops so radically, that all of the aesthethics and beauty of my desktop fades away. The performance curve seems to be linearly dependant of the number of opened windows. Blur applied to the "static elements" like bars, plasmoids and the like doesn't seem to have any impact on compositing performance. Whenever I set windeco opacity to 100%, everything starts to move around silky-smoothly. What really astonishes me is that this KDE installation runs on not so bad specs. You wouldn't consider nV gf 8800gtx with 768MB memory and a 2.4 GHz quad core Intel to be insufficient to handle desktop compositing, even a little bit more demanding one, would you? On a software side, I have already tried different kernels (Archlinux, from 3.0 to 3.4, both in stock and liquorix flavours) and switched between different versions of binary nvidia driver (now 302.17). The situation was more less the same across these sets. As soon as I get my hands on the new RIFS scheduler, I will test on that one as well, and maybe share the result with you. On the very same machine I have also Win7 installed, but there the blurred windeco background doesn't seem to be a problem, and from what I have seen, animation speed doesn't depend on the number of windows visible on the desktop. I would also like to hear ,what more experienced KDE users/programmers think on this subject. Thank you in advance for any input!

Try again with 4.9 and it's not a usecase KWin is optimized for given that our default window decoration/widget style does not use translucency.

Ok, thank you very much, that settles it for now.
