X memory usage blowing up

Sun Dec 02, 2012 5:40 pm
X begins to eat up 2gb of ram and reaches up to 2.7gb of ram. This is with KDE 4.9.3 + Kwin. I also had the same issue with razor-qt + kwin. I then logged in with twm and launched plasma-desktop and all the KDE stuff, and the issue was gone.

This is with nvidia 310.19. Trying xrender, raster, kwin_gles, etc.. made no difference. I am not sure if this occurs over time (since X starts out with normal memory usage) or if it occurs after waking up from suspend. Once X is bloated with memory usage, the CPU usage also goes up and I have to disable compositing in order for it to run smoothly.

Did you try a different window manager, to make sure this is a problem with KWin?

Greetings

I'm working on the KDevelop IDE.

Yeah, TWM. Didn't have anything else installed.

Re: X memory usage blowing up  Topic is solved

CPU usage is likely "just" swapping.

Questions:
- You see that memory usage in RAM, not VRAM? (ie. what's does "xrestop" tell you? that's X-res-top, not X-re-stop ;-)
- Does the memory get released once you suspend compositing?
- Does it depend on the window decoration?
- Tried downgrading the nvidia blob?

no

no

I downgraded to the 304 and it seemed to fix it. But there was the openGL blue tint bug on that one, tried to switch versions but didn't work, etc.. etc.., and I ended up installing the 310.19 version again, and I can't seem to reproduce the problem anymore.

So I guess I'll assume it had installed weird and its fixed now. Thanks.
