Hi All,
Unsure if this is an nVidia, Fedora, or KDE issue, but I'm starting with this forum. I have been running a highly customized/tweaked/fixed version of Fedora 10, Gnome and Compiz on a Dell Precision M4300 for about 4 years. The compositing effects are gorgeous, but it's time to move on. Compiz is dead, my employer "forced" me to get a new laptop, etc. KDE seems to be the only Desktop Environment that's even marginally close to what I had before. And it pretty much works great, with two major exceptions: 1) If I use Alt+Shift+F12 to toggle desktop effects (or just make a change to Desktop Effects settings), doing anything with Effects enabled after that is like I'm working on hardware from 1999. Picture dragging windows through molasses. Restarting X fixes the issue, but I can reload Compiz all day long on my old laptop and never see these kinds of symptoms. 2) I'm experiencing severe tearing when dragging windows with compositing enabled. But *only* in the top 10-20% of the screen. I have tried all the various combinations of vsync settings and tweaks to the nVidia driver. I have also tried various versions of the proprietary driver from both nVidia and the non-free repos. Please hold the flames about bleeding edge hardware/software. I'm aware. Just looking for some advice on how to keep my otherwise beautiful/functional KDE desktop from tearing the sh*t out of my windows when I drag them around. Suggestions for alternate places to post this question are welcome, as are requests for further diagnostic output/info. OS: Fedora 17, all updates applied Hardware: Dell M4700 laptop, Intel Ivy Bridge GPU: nVidia Quadro K2000 (integrated Intel card has been neutered by disabling "Optimus" in the BIOS) Current Video Driver: nVidia 313.09 Beta (but issue is present with latest production drivers from nVidia and rpmfusion) KDE Version: 4.9.3 I'm having flashbacks from when I had to compile Compiz from source (with a patch or two thrown in) to fully optimize my desktop experience. And I'm willing to do something like that again if that's the solution. It's just frustrating... I have my four year old Dell M4300 sitting next to my brand new, M4700, and the old box kinda leaves the new one in the dust when it comes to a compositing window manager. I would try Ubuntu+Unity, but from what I've read, that's not exactly a bed of roses, either. SC |

Thanks very much for the update/info. Am I getting the correct impression that this is being worked on and a fix/workaround will find its way into the kwin code eventually? I am extremely impressed with the compositing features in kwin available with the proprietary nVidia driver. The tearing/sync issues are the only thing keeping me from completely falling in luv at this point.
Thanks again and I will keep an eye on 107198. |

yes, however the patch will not be in 4.10 but instead a recently introduced GL extension will be supported with 4.11
You can however just inject that patch if you comoile yourself - it's safe for use |
