My system: gentoo x86_64 with ATI 6770 using catalyst ati-drivers
Everything is fine with KDE 4.9.5 but after upgrading to 4.10, all my desktop effects are gone.
whenever I enable/disable an effect, the message "xx desktop effects could not be loaded " will appear, click on Details will give me "Desktop effect system is not running".
Deleted ~/.kde4 of another user and login with that user, same problem.

are you running the latest Catalyst driver version? If not please update.

That gives me back my desktop effects again, now how do I keep this across reboots?
exporting those variables in /etc/profile or ~/.bashrs does not help.

I don't know whether that's the latest, but it is important to run the latest, latest version in 4.10. There have been changes for the detection of OpenGL in Catalyst case to get direct rendering.

If you want to export it, put it into an executable file in ~/.kde/env/

mgraesslin, 13.1 is the latest.
I export those variables in an excutable file in ~/.kde/env/ but somehow KWIN_COMPOSE is always Y even after logging out.
