Video tearing with KDE

Fri Feb 22, 2013 7:37 pm
Hi,

I have ubuntu 12.04.02 x64 and kde 4.10.00.
I'm having a little video tearing while playing ANY video (HD mkv, avi, etc...).
    - it happens with vlc latest version and with default ubuntu video player and also with other players like kmplayer.
    - I have some effects enebled and I use: openGL, Raster, shader openGL 2 and vertical sync
    - I have ATI MSI R6870 hawk with latest fglrx video card driver AMD Catalyst™ 13.1 Proprietary Linux Display Driver
    - My pc hardware are: CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500 Sandy Bridge , Motherboard: Asus P8P67 PRO, Display: full hd display (DVI)
    - glxinfo says direct rendering: yes
    - No problem with Windows 7

How to solve it?
Thanks

ok, i would like to add this:
the tearing happens only on one specific position of the display (it's like there is one line on the top of the screen that causes video tearing) and it happens also with other windows (like moving a window on the top of the screen) so not only with videos.

thanks

You precisely observe what is covered by the RR.
Disable vsync in kwin - it does not work because the buffer copying takes longer than the vertical retrace (and finishes when the scanline is at the tearline you observe)

W/o vsyncing you'll at least not get a steady line but the tearline shifting across the screen what makes is much less apparent.
