windows lose focus arbitrarly

Sun Jun 02, 2013 12:16 pm
Dear all,

I'm using KDE on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (actually the kubuntu flavor), i.e. KWin version 4.8.5.
Things worked smoothly for a long time, but at some point, my windows started losing focus seemingly for no reason.

This loss-of-focus happens about every other minute, e.g. while typing this, or an email, or commands in the Terminal, and despite the fact that I let focus-follow-mouse and the mouse stay on the window where I'm typing.

It does not seem to be a case of having a different application "steal" the focus, because this happens without other applications being present, and hardening the the "focus-stealing-prevention" did not help.

My question is this: is this a known bug with a known work-around (I googled but found no match), and is there a way to find out what is causing the change of focus? Can I inspect a log of focus events? Is there a verbose debug mode that will print all focus event or something similar?

Any help is greatly appreciated -- I need to fix this to be able to continue with KDE!

no

Focus is normally passed to another window, so there seems to be another window. 4.8 is a little bit old, so our normal methods to check this are not available.

no

no

my best suggestion is to switch to click to focus.

thanks for the quick reply!

I've tried switching to click-to-focus as suggested, but it didn't help, I'm still losing focus, even if I just sit there doing nothing.

(At some point I thought it was my touchpad being overly sensitive, but even reducing the sensitivity to the point where it didn't respong to my touch didn't help.)

I'd say it's https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=318350 - despite "thunderbird" in the title it seems related to the new QML notification which apparently causes the panel to forcefully take the focus.

This seem to solve my issue, thanks very much! I followed your advise in the discussion of the bug in comment 16, namely to

Try to setup a rule for that panel ("kcmshell4 kwinrules", press detect and pick the panel where you notifier resides) to forcefully not get the focus (last tab, "Accept Focus"/"Force"/"No")

and my windows keep focus now.

So thanks again! kai
