KWin sound effects in 4.11

Wed Nov 13, 2013 9:40 pm
Upgrading from KDE 4.10 to 4.11 was mostly a joy and free from any issues. However, it also had a reason of disappointment for me. Since I first switched to KDE, I enabled various KWin sound effects which I enjoyed having... such as sounds for minimizing / maximizing / opening / closing windows. Apparently 4.11 removes KWin notifications entirely, which is how those sounds worked. Although the reason is correct (reducing useless DBus traffic) there's no way to get KWin sound effects back.

Now that notifications are gone, is there an alternative way to re-enable those sounds? I assume there are other methods that can be used, such as a KWin script or a new desktop effect (although desktop effects are aimed at visuals rather than sound). Preferably, such a thing can be added to KDE in a future update. The audio was a nice addition to the desktop environment, and I'd like to bring it back.

yes it would be possible to reimplement them with a KWin script.

Awesome. Does anyone have plans to do that (I never worked with such scripts and don't know how)? And if it's done, will it be accepted in the next version of KDE (maybe even 4.11.3)?

the point about scripts is that there's really no need to ship them with kwin etc., but they can be added like plasmoids via GHNS.
