Hi! I am running KDE 4.11.3 on Funtoo system. I tried to connect an external display using VGA, but either I can use the clone display, or the two displays are treated as one. That is, for example, when I maximize a window, it stretches onto two screens. I am using a Thinkpad T430s with a Nvidia Optimus card. If I enable the optimus support, only one screen will show display no matter how I configure. I guess the VGA is attached on the intel output but I am not sure. Anyone have idea?
EDIT: Recompiled everything with USE=xinerama and it works! The problem may lie on qtgui which did not compile with xinerama support. Thank everyone for your help!

So why this happens? xrandr commands under KDE produces same result, but if I use another WM such as fvwm, clone is the only working one

I burnt a linuxmint DVD, and it worked perfectly, so the problem should be lying on X.
Xorg.0.log from mint:
Seems that the monitor is not detected correctly. |

Unfortunately using Optimus cards under Linux tends to be quite complicated and unreliable.
Can you confirm that both the Funtoo and Mint systems were using the same method to enable Optimus support?

Both DO NOT use optimus---they use Intel directly since the VGA is directly connected onto the intel card. |

Please post the output you get from "xrandr" as that may help indicate what the issue is. I would also suggest eliminating anything display related from Xorg.conf as that should not be needed. Xinerama shouldn't be used.

xrandr
get-edid | parse-edid
No display-related xorg.conf. BTW, how do I upload screenshot? I think that might be helpful. |

Screenshots need to be uploaded using a separate service such as Imageshack i'm afraid.
The xrandr output looks normal in this case. I'm going to move this to the KWin forum to see if the KWin folks have any extra insight into why this might be occurring. It certainly sounds like something such as Xinerama might be active, even though that doesn't appear to be the case.

If I do tail -f ~/.xsession-errors, and try to set VGA1 above LVDS1, the following flushes the log:
Lots of unrelated info though, because I don't know where I can get the log of KDE itself. I am also trying to build a LFS to test out, but may take a LONG time. |

Just quick to mention that under Mint, I don't get any errors about EDID or ICC, and I can see the EDID matrix in the Xorg.0.log, but under Gentoo, EDID is not shown and the error is there. However, I don't know if this relates to the problem. I tried to use openbox-kde session so that KWin is inactive, but the same problem still occurs. For some reason E17 also fails but Openbox works, and in E17 console log I saw some xinerama-related info. Maybe this info is helpful?

Does the xrandr command have any effect, even if it is merely causing the second screen to flicker, or is it a simple no-op?

As what I have tested, it is the same as if I change things in kde setting. |

So there is absolutely no change, not even a flicker? If it is flickering that indicates that something might be reverting your configuration change.
You can also compare the output of "xrandr" to see if something is reverting your configuration changes.
