I recently upgraded my laptop from OpenSUSE 12.2 to 13.1 . After reboot, the window decorations in KDE were messed up: no top bar visible, fragmentary menu bar, empty pop-up menu's. Everything works fine in the Safe mode, but in a lower resolution (1024x768). Also the background image and the desktop icons and the content in a window is correct. When one passes with the mouse over the place of the top bar, the icons for minimizing/maximizing and closing become visible. If one clicks on a menu option, a blank frame appears, but a click in the frame provokes a normal reaction. This is only pratical if you know that you need the first or last option in the (hidden) list.
What file(s) is are corrupted and should be replaced or corrected? System: Laptop HP Pavilion , Intel Core 2 T5600 processor at 1.83 GHz, 1 GB RAM. Display: 1440x900px. Graphic card: Nvidia Geforce Ge 7600 with the Nouveau driver (no nvidia driver present on the system) |

Then try to install the proprietary nvidia driver. See here: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers But let's continue this in your thread in the openSUSE forums. Would have been nice if you had provided the same information there... |

the solution was in using alt-schift-F12 for switching off desktop effects.
Thanks for the replies! Huibc |

you could probably use xrender compositing (kcmshell4 kwincompositing, 3rd tab) - but if opengl on nouveau does not work for you, better use the nvidia blob (for other applications relying on usable opengl support)
