I am unfortunately still running into a problem.
I've been able to successfully activate Kwin from the CLI, but I've not been successful in making Kwin the default window manager. kwin still doesn't launch automatically after I login. so far, I've tried all the following "solutions": 1. I added kwin_forceGL.sh in ~/.kde/env/ and ~/.kde/Autostart
NOTE: I had to create the env folder, because it didn't exist. This had no effect when launching kwin from the CLI 2. I created ~/.xinitrc
3. I added KWIN_COMPOSE=O1 in /etc/environment This doesn't seem to work as a KWIN_COMPOSE doesn't appear in a printenv command. 4. Using dconf-editor, I replaced "macro" with "kwin" in "org > mate > desktop > session > required-components" 5. I've added "KWIN_COMPOSE=O1 kwin --replace" to ~/.bashrc. This works but only after I open a terminal window. 6. I added export KWIN_COMPOSE=O1 to /etc/profile and to ~/.profile 7. I created a shortcut to my desktop to a kwin_activate.sh script 8. I added the kwin_activate.sh script to /etc/init.d 9. I used update-alternatives --config x-window-manager to setup kwin as the default VM None of these options have worked. How do I permanently make kwin my default WM? Thank you |

I don't know whether mate allows you to select the default window manager, you'll have to ask mate experts here.
running "KWIN_COMPOSE=O1 kwin --replace &" after the session started would replace the running windowmanager (compiz?), but of course it would be better if mate allowed you to select a window manager. NOTICE AGAIN: it is "O1" like OpenGL or like in "Oh my god" or "Otto" or "Ordinary" - it is *NOT* "01" like in "zero-one" |

Thank you.
On Ubuntu/Mate/Compiz, I could easily set the default WM with option 4 using "dconf-editor". But this doesn't seem to work on Debian/Mate/Kwin. I'll post my question on a Mate forum. |
