KConfig allows to lock down certain values. If you are concerned about users installing themes, disallow it.

It's not "a theme".
The troublemaker is QtQuick in general - and that just affects a lot of things in plasmashell / KDE5.

In any case, I found out how to reproduce the bug consistently. Using an aurorae-based theme and a dual monitor set up, I do the following:

1) Open a VM in Virtualbox in the second monitor and close Virtualbox Manager so that only the VM window is in the second monitor, maximized.
2) Open Firefox (via taskbar icon).

Firefox will try to open on the main monitor and kwin will crash, with no DrKonqi to help out. Breeze decorations don't have this problem.

I can file a bug report with the backtraces if you think that someone will look into it. I am not sure if the gdb obtained backtrace (the second one) is of any use though, I think some symbols are missing but not sure which, as I have installed Kwin5's debuginfo package. If you think the BT is helpful, I can go ahead with the report.

In order to reproduce this, the VM window needs to be the last active window before opening firefox, otherwise it's not triggered.

I am fine with that, it is more consistent and looks better with KF5 anyway. Glad we got to the bottom of this.

The DrKonqi related bug is already fixed, the other bug is in QtQuick - and i frankly don't believe it'll ever fix.
My personal perception of QtQuick so far is that it's completely FUBAR
