Hello
i read this article on tabbed windows ( http://www.linux-magazine.com/Online/Fe ... s-with-KDE) and then began to search for this magnificent tool. But I was then pointed out to this url which makes clear it's a missing feature with Plasma 5.5 ( https://community.kde.org/Plasma/5.5_Er ... g_features ) Do you know if this tabbed windows option will be back soon ? Thanks

First I would like to thank all the KDE devs for the excellent work they have put in to developing KDE and KDE Plasma. I much prefer it over Gnome.
I've been using window tabs in KDE Plasma 4 for about two years now, not sure how I managed to live without them before that, but now I rarely have an untabbed window by itself, especially when on my laptop. When plasma 5 came out I was devastated to learn that they no longer worked, and have switched back to Plasma 4 as they are a feature that I can't live without. So I am also wondering if there is any way to get them to work currently? I read that they don't work with the Breeze theme so I assume they might work with Oxygen but couldn't figure out how to install that on Plasma 5. Or if there is any other workaround to get them going? Perhaps someone who knows more about KDE that also can't live without window tabs and has figured out how to get them work? Thanks for any suggestions |

Thanks to all KDE coders, you've made the best desktop environment I've used in decades.
How can I help get tabbed windows back in plasma 5? I've searched enough to know it's a kwin challenge, but don't know what it will be needed to return the functionality. If someone would point me to the correct developer information I'd be grateful (and maybe pitch in). A design goal that I would be glad to push is to enable the user to group arbitrary windows easily into hierarchical works paces, similar to activities and virtual desktops, but with, e.g. window rules that could assign arbitrary windows to a desktop screen or a group that could be activated in the same way that "present windows" can do for all, desktop, and program types. Tabbed windows are great because they define another and more work-flow based level of organization: that is the key function needed for efficient work on my projects, at least. For example, in science writing, I use a vdesktop for a project that includes several organization levels. Different groups of okular documents related to different topics, different groups for subsets of email, image, and matlab windows, etc. It would be great to be able to tag these groups, inspect their windows, and select the target window rapidly. One easy-to-describe approach would be to deepen the "present windows" function to allow more selection options, e.g. task groups analogous to the virtual desktops. Now present windows allows us to show an overview of all, desktop, or program id groups. Adding "virtual work group" to this would be a huge help for getting complex work done efficiently. Please tell me how I can help move this forward. Thank you, matthew |

This thread doesn't seem to be attracting too much attention but, nevertheless, I would like to endorse it.
KDE team is doing an amazing job and the latest releases (ATOW 5.9) are shining but I still miss the tabbed windows and I believe many more people also do. I think we should be filling a feature request to KDE but I am not sure about how to proceed. Could anyone please help? Thanks! |

I would also like to thank KDE devs . I cannot imagine myself using anything else other than KDE.
I know that no desktop environment can ever be perfect . What I can say though is that KDE gives me the feeling of perfection. I've been a KDE user for a decade now . I keep having a look at various desktop environments, window managers etc... only to reassure myself that KDE-kwin is by far the best DE-window manager. What I can also say is that the windows grouping , tabbing, Tab-Dragging feature has given me such a big boost to my workflow that I dare to admit that this is the reason why I am still using kde4 mainly. I am looking forward to switching to KDE5 though . I believe that devs are aware of this missing feature and working on it. It is actually noted in the missing features of every release. https://community.kde.org/Plasma/5.10_Errata There are many things that have been fixed though. I am endorsing this thread and encouraging the devs to keep up the good work. |
