Hi!
This is on plasma 5.6 and Arch stable fully updated... I tried to scale my desktop to a factor of 1.5 to test whether scaling is viable now but any setting I choose doesn't affect the desktop at all, no scaling (Yes! I restarted KDE and Ir estarted my whole box....) So how can I make it work? BTW: the screen resolution gets lost every login also and has to be reset... thx for reading, p. |

I tested with factor of 2.5 and seemed to work fine, try with a more extreme factor
ps - restarting kwin_x11 should initiate the changes instead of a restart |

Well, maybe it's due to loosing kscreen settings each restart...
"kwin -- replace" doesn't work anymore. What is the proper way to restart it? Thx, piedro |

Sry, but I tried that before posting...
gives me "command not found" it's kwin 5.6.1-1 on arch with plasma 5.6 and the apps 15.12 stuff... p. |

kwin binary is either kwin_x11 or kwin_wayland in KDE 5
what kwin* is found in /usr/bin

Ok, found it. ty!
Now the issue remains, the preview in kscreen kcm module shows changes but when I re-login these chnges seem to be ignored (as is the screen resolution - that's why I try to chnge the scaling in the first place!). Also - shouldn't fonts be affected too? they seem to stay as small as ever (for me having problems with my eyesight...) How can I make the session start process to really read and adapt the settings I use for ksreen via the Kde systemsettings? sigh |

Even more:
the entire plasmashell does not change even after "kwin_x11 --replace" also killing the plasmashell with "killall plasmashell" and "kstart plasmashell" will not change the scaling of the panel, the widgets or the notifications sigh, p. |

agree - plasmashell not changed by scaling factor, no idea its supposed to
for me not all fonts were changed - example everything in my browser except the web page increased in size (I had to restart browser to have it take affect) if you need larger fonts try changing the font sizes used in systemsettings -> font |

I already changed the fonts - but now without the scaling the line height in krunner doesn't hold the height of the font...
You know what's really funny is that now it seems that gtk applications actually do scale! None of the KDE applications does though... they change according to the font size but: the GTK application fonts now are way bigger! (Yes, I also changed the fonts for GTK apps in the kde systemsettings...) It really seems as if the scaling option itself has no effect on the whole KDE plasma desktop... Now, could there be any leftover config files from the updates lately? Which config files are the ones responsible here? ty, p. |

After three reboots (?) I get the scaling going on KDE applications.
But all plasma elements are not scaled - giving me small windows titles and small menus in kicker or any alternative starter. The KDE applications (scaled to 2.0 for testing give me double font sizes. The QT applications scale as well. The GTK applications stay the same as before - somewhere in between sizes. Adjusting fonts does not work as they appear unscaled in some places and differently scaled in others. How is this supposed to work? Can't find any documentation on the scaling option either... p. |

better define what doesn't work - you say Gnome, KDE and QT scaling does work. Fonts don't work "in some places" - define places.
did you try changing DPI? For plasma desktop start new thread in Plasma forum, but note for me DPI increas to 120 increased the font size in the taskbar |

KDE and QT applications scale correctly, GTK applications do not scale correctly.
I have set the scale factor to 2.0 but GTK including firefox UI scales around 1.3 which is clearly not intended. I tried to describe the wrong fonts: all plasma elements like the start menu and the panel, widgets and notification do not scale at all. Maybe I could try to restart them after the session started but neither "plasmashell --shut-up" nor "killall plasmashell" and "kstart plasmashell" seems to work anymore. How to restart the plasmashell? Changing the font DPI settings has nothing to do with DPI, as far as I know, it's just another scaling mechanism that also scales the fonts. So changing the DPI and changing the scale factor is cumulative and creates even bigger fonts in all KDE applications. The mismatch beetwenn plasma element fonts and application fonts obviously stays the same. Yes it scales the plasma UI but it scales also the applications on top of the scaling ratio from UI scaling in the monitor settings. That does not work. I tried pure DPI scaling before which had similar problems and was very excited about the global scaling option in the monitor section of the systemsettings. But it seems to me it's just not a finished feature - if even you do not know how to make it work to scale the whole desktop UI including plasma elements - than it is probably just another undocumented and unfinished maybe-works-in-the-future showoff feature. I start thinking we waste our time... p. |

no idea - don't use it (any of what's neing discussed discussing)
for gtk apps maybe you need to install and config Gnome-control-center for fonts/scaling/dpi |
