Hi!
I have KDE v.4.14.13 on Mint 17.3 x64. KWin started to have problems long ago and after searching the bug tracker I found that since KDE 4 is abandoned I have to wait until Mint switch to KDE 5. Most of my problems (broken effects, transitions, Kwin collapses etc.) are known and there's no solution. The latest days (probably after a security patch?), KWin is very buggy and I have to search for a solution until the next Mint version (although I don't know if KDE 5 will be adopted). As I said, I have to find a viable solution, for the next couple of months (until next Mint version will be out). I already tried Trinity desktop and (since I'm familiar with KDE 3), is a really good solution for me, for the next 2 months to use. Before (temporarily) switching to Trinity, I'm thinking to try an alternate X Window Manager with KDE v.4.14.13. I already tried Metacity (just because it was already installed here). Not surprisingly (since it wasn't designed for KDE) it's virtually unusable. I also installed and tried Compiz and OpenBox (because some users reported that were succeeded using them on KDE). No surprises here too. Compiz is broken and OpenBox actually works but it's (more or less) buggy. Well.....after this really long prologue, here's my question: Does anyone knows an X Window Manager (other than KWin) that actually works for KDE 4? It doesn't need, to be perfect. I just want it, for the next couple of months. TIA! G.

Honestly, OpenBox is probably the best alternative to KWin out there for KDE integration. It's what LxQt uses, and that's basically trying to be a lightweight KDE alternative. I'm not surprised that Metacity didn't play nice with KDE, because it was developed by GNOME. Used to be their default WM, I think.
I would suggest trying FVWM. It's highly configurable and I think you could set it up to stay out of the way of KDE's panel. You could probably make it look like it fits in with KDE if you're willing to work with it. It's fully ICCCM compliant, whereas Metacity was only compliant with the subset of ICCCM that GNOME needed. There's really a wealth of Window managers worth trying, though. There's Enlightenment, Fluxbox, IceWM... one great thing about X is that there's no shortage of them. My favorite minimalist Window Manager is JWM, but that's REALLY primitive and probably wouldn't integrate well with KDE. |

thanks for reply. It is a good idea but it doesn't really work, and I use panel tint2 more kde panel, right click on tint2 is to openbox, this makes 2 config to do.
Other ideas? |

Hello I'm new on Kde but I had a stand-alone Openbox and tint2 panel before because I have a LXDE.
Did you try XFWM?It's a good WM with many theme and easy to configure.Compositing are supported and documentation is complete around the web. I have recently installed KDE 4.14.8 and I have problem with Kwin too (theming is.......difficult) Good luck |
