hello all, i thought i'd ask here, as my thread on the ubuntu forums seems to have died ... anyway, I've been googling around for what seems like forever trying to get to the bottom of why my blur plugin doesn't work, if I enable it from the desktop effects settings, nothing happens, my windows remain transparent, but the background doesn't blur. I don't even know where to start in terms of troubleshooting, because I've only just updated to 4.2.1 (it didn't work in 4.1 either). The only thing I've found relating to this on these forums, rivo's blog and general googling is that there are a few known problems with newer nvidia cards, but I use an ATI card!

anyway i hope someone here could lend a helping hand, I'm running KDE 4.2.1 on kubuntu 8.10, with an ATI HD2900 GPU, and an AMD 5200+ CPU, my OS is fully updated, and my graphics drivers are up to date too.

thanks in advance, looking forward to a reply!

KDE 4.2.0 hasn't even been released yet--it's not even in beta! Why is Ubuntu faking a non-existing version I dunno...

The problem you are facing is most likely Bug 173556.

must be version 4.1.2 as opposed to 2.1, got my 2s and 1s muddled up lol, not sure if it is that bug tbh, as the cube and cylinder plugins weren't included in kubuntu 8.10 because they were deamed unstable. as far as i'm aware the latest shader versions are enabled, I'll check out glxinfo in a bit as i'm not at my own PC right now

thanks!

ok glxinfo | grep shader gives:

Code: Select all
ricardo@ricardo-desktop:~$ glxinfo | grep shader
    GL_AMDX_vertex_shader_tessellator, GL_AMD_performance_monitor,
    GL_ARB_draw_instanced, GL_ARB_fragment_program, GL_ARB_fragment_shader,
    GL_ARB_point_parameters, GL_ARB_point_sprite, GL_ARB_shader_objects,
    GL_ARB_shader_texture_lod, GL_ARB_shading_language_100, GL_ARB_shadow,
    GL_ARB_vertex_program, GL_ARB_vertex_shader, GL_ARB_window_pos,
    GL_ATI_draw_buffers, GL_ATI_envmap_bumpmap, GL_ATI_fragment_shader,
    GL_EXT_gpu_shader4, GL_EXT_multi_draw_arrays, GL_EXT_packed_depth_stencil,

i have no idea what any of that means lol, guessing it means there's nothing wrong with the vertex shaders though...

I really want this to work as i've been waiting for a plugin just like this ever since I installed beryl for the first time!

I've got the same problem with my ATI Radeon Mobility X600 SE. Everything else works perfectly except the KWin plugins (Blur, Desktop Cylinder and Sphere).
