I'd like to change the behavior in which windows open.

Right now (default behavior) I do the following:

* go to desktop 1
* launch application x using KRunner or Application Launcher
* while application is being launched, I switch to desktop 2
* application x shows up in desktop 2

I want that application x shows up in desktop 1 even if I have switched to desktop 2.

Is that possible?

I don't know if the default behaviour can be changed or not, but if you want specific applications to open on specific virtual desktops, that's possible.

So, you can have that Firefox always open in desktop 1, office always open in desktop 3 and so on.
