Konsole window position and size

Sat Jun 05, 2021 10:33 am
Hello all,

I am experiencing a very strange issue with Konsole: Every time I open the application it opens at the top left of the screen with a terminal size of 59x1.

What I have tried so far:

I removed the ~/.config/konsolerc configuration file and the ~/.local/share/konsole folder. I lost my configuration but the window opened again at the same position and with the same size.

I unchecked the Settings > Configure Konsole > General > Remember window size. This started Konsole again at top left corner but with the initial size of the profile.

I must state that I do not have any KWin rules.

I tried to create some for Konsole and they were respected, but the moment I deleted them, Konsole started opening again at the top left of the screen with a terminal size of 59x1.

Any help is much appreciated.

Re: Konsole window position and size

Since I posted this, I have been trying things and I might have not included an important piece of information in my original post.

I changed my monitor and I replaced it with a 3-monitor configuration. This is when this started to happen. I have the same positioning problem with konsole, dolphin, and systemsettings.

So, I opened konsole. It opened on the top left corner of the left screen.
Then I maximized it and clicked the maximize button again.
Then I dragged the lower right edge to resize it and closet.

When I opened it again, it opened with the correct size and position. That solved the issue partially for all the apps that were showing this issue.

Now the problem is that those apps will not remember their position on a different monitor. They will always open on the left monitor.

I must state that my "Primary" monitor is the middle one.

The quest continues...
I realized that this is not an issue with konsole, but rather with my multi-screen setup. So I am changing the subject of this thread accordingly.

The two applications which are currently facing this issue: konsole and dolphin.

I have a 3-monitor setup:

I am toggling this setting:
System Settings → Window Management → Window Behavior → Advanced

When enabled:
The apps remember their positions, but only when they on one of the two side screens. If I move them to the centre screen and close them, the next time I open them, they open on the last side screen they were.

When disabled:
The apps open on the centre screen, but of course, they do not remember their position.

Does anybody have an idea where those applications that support remembering their own windows save that setting?

Hi,

have you found a way to solve your issue? I am having a similar issue with Konsole, although this happens on a two-monitor setup (well laptop-monitor and external-monitor).

If I have Konsole "remember window size", it started opening always with a very small size (163 x 4), no matter what I tried changing.

I then tried to follow some of your steps, and deleted the contents of the [MainWindow] section of ~/.config/konsolerc, which led to a very small Konsole window. Now, if I open Konsole on the laptop monitor (the one on the left in my setup) and maximize it, then un-maximize it and exit, that size is stored. Whenever I open Konsole again, it is opened with that size, but it always opens on the left monitor (the laptop one). My "main" or "primary" monitor as defined in "Display Configuration" is the external, larger one, located to the right of the laptop. Konsole is never opened there.

If I maximize Konsole on the laptop monitor and close it, then that setting seems to stick, and I can open Konsole on the primary monitor, but it always starts up maximized. If I un-maximize the window and/or resize it, and then close it, it does not matter, when I start it it is maximized.

If I move it to the left-most monitor (laptop) and resize it there, then the size *and position* seems to be remembered, as I described in the paragraph above, and it is always opened there :(

As you, I don't have any KWin rules or any specific configuration (at least, not one set up on purpose by me) that would explain this behaviour.

Did you come up with a way to solve your issue?

Thanks!

I have the same problem.
I just installed Kubuntu 22.04 on an nvidia graphics powered laptop with X11 and attached two external 4k monitors to it. Middle external monitor is the primary one. Display scaling is 150%.
Laptop lid is closed because of its low FullHD resolution.
Konsole opens at random places and its window size is as small as possible. Even after restart the new window size is not saved.
Similar behavior with Settings and Dolphine window.
