Black screen on Boot, intermittent

Mon Jul 19, 2021 2:41 pm
Hi

Hope you can help me.
I am a newbie to KDE and Linux, I have chosen Kubuntu 21.04 as my O/S

After many weeks of slowly adding Software and attaching Hardware and almost have everything setup.
My PC has decided to intermittently boot to a Black Screen, this happens about 7 times out of 10.
Sometimes it Boots to a normal desktop and everything works.

Most times its a Black screen and almost nothing works ?
The terminal works and I can run Firefox & spectacle works.
If i type dolphin it only opens the dolphin title bar not the full application.

I am sure you will need more Info, but as a newbie, I will need instructions ?

While this is frustrating to be so close to my completed install of Kubuntu, perhaps this is a good time to learn how to fix problems.
My previous job was Electronics fault finding, so I have a logical mind.

My PC is set to auto login.

Thanks
Gaz

What did you modify from the default Kubuntu installation?
You should always make a complete installation before making changes to the system, else it gets hard to reproduce where the error lies.

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

Hi,

Everything is standard software installs, mostly from Discover & Muon, the hardware was a cups printer.

I can see messages on Boot and shutdown but they are only on the screen for a fraction of a second.

Thanks

You should first update your system in a second screen (Ctrl+Alt+F2), log in with your credentials, then type the following:
Code: Select all
Sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

You can go back to the previous screen with Ctrl+Alt+F1.

Does this help?

Hi Thanks for that info, earlier today i changed the compositor from OpenGL 2.0 to XRender ( via System settings).

At the moment it hasn't failed at boot, so I will defer your recommendation, but if it does go wrong again I will try it.
I can also change it to OpenGL 3.1 and this still boots OK.
Are there any advantages as to which one of the three to use ?

But I would still like to see the messages that flash briefly on the screen when it boots and when it Shuts down, is there any way to do this ?
I tried removing quiet splash in the Grub menu, but it still boots as normal ???

thank you

Whichever works best for you - xrender does all the work on the CPU, instead of the graphics chip, so is the least preferred

Did you update grub after the edit?
Also, try just hitting the Esc key when booting/shutting down, when you see the splash screen. This should toggle between text and the splash.
