I know many users of earlier 5.x.x & 4.x.x releases miss that kewl beans Kwin animated window switching methods that used the infamous:

  • Desktop Cube
  • Desktop Sphere
  • Desktop Cylinder

Well, I got a lot of messages from different sources as i posted about this in many places thus I decided that if no one was going to re-code what little that is needed to bring it back, I would. That was 3 weeks ago and I have most of it coded and will say it is looking great. I just need to verify a few things with a few others and then will be doing some last bit of testing on a few different distro's using slightly older packages that some LTS releases use. Of course there will be a minimum set of dependencies with respect to QT (5.15 or >), Plasma (5.9.x) and KDE Framework (5.15.x).

I realize nott everyone uses the absolute latest distro release with the most up to date libraries, however, I have to start somewhere :)

It will be made as a separate 'Window Manager Effect' with it available for download from the KDE Store, the Systemsettings Desktop Effects applet directly of course and via Git. I will re-post with the GIT site information and progress shortly. Tnx to all who contacted me before when I posted in the Kwin forum with this post: viewtopic.php?f=111&t=175513

i know the Google link does not work in my previous post however all it showed was all 3 animations working with the then current Plasma version (5.78.0).

The code is currently based on the following:

  • KDE Plasma Version: 5.26.0
  • KDE Framework Version: 5.98.0
  • QT Version: 5.15.6

This does NOT mean it will not work with packages slightly older. I am compiling it using 3 different versions that are slightly older so there will be some wiggle room.

I run Debian Sid (11.x) - the developmental daily updated version with Kernel 6.0.0-2-amd64 with X11 with an Optimus/Prime Nvidia 3070 setup. A complete PITA if ya ask me.
