Hi !

A few weeks ago desktop effects went off and I cannot enable them again. Using a ATI card (X700 mobile), KDE RC (4.1.96), but only a few days ago (not few weeks) compositing just could not been launched. When activating it in systemsettings, i get this error message :
Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options. Settings will be reverted to their previous values.
Check your X configuration. You may also consider changing advanced options, especially changing the compositing type.

I tried many settings combinations but no way.

Compiz-fusion works as usual (except the kde4 windows decorator plugin, which does not show any window !)

Thanks to god it's a while I did not change my xorg.conf, but with this message error, i have no clue about the options that could be in cause !!
(i just tried to enable/disable these settings needed for compiz :
Code: Select all
        Option "PseudoColorVisuals" "off"
    Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
    Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
)

my xorg.conf : http://florent.nouvellon.net/temp/xorg.conf

KWin (kde-window-decorator) is the KDE window manager.
Can you give the output of the following command from konsole?
Code: Select all
kwin --replace

Also, rename the kwin config file and try the command again. To rename:
Code: Select all
cd ~/.kde/share/config && mv kwinrc kwinrc_old

Thanks for fast answer !

Code: Select all
cd ~/.kde/share/config && mv kwinrc kwinrc_old

OK I did that, restarted xorg and KDE and no change !

This is definitely wrong:
Code: Select all
kwin(28935) KWin::Workspace::setupCompositing: No compositing

Make sure you have your old kwinrc before you do this:
Anyway, in System Settings -> Desktop -> Advanced (tab ) and select compositing type as XRender.

EDIT: Scratch this out.. please try out what Zarin posted.

Sorry I actually had not seen this topic.
So running this command makes compositing work :
Code: Select all
`KWIN_COMPOSE=O kwin --replace`
How can I automate that ?

Just by selecting OpenGL mode in System settings -> desktop -> advanced. You might need to temporarily change it so that it gets written to the config file.

Solved after installing R.4.2.0 ! :thumbs_up:

A big big ovation for the KDE dev team and community for all their work, with this release KDE4 basis seems now to be really accomplished and merits to be refered as the "most advanced desktop" !
