Hi, I am unable to get compositing with Kwin. This has happened ever since I started using the neon nightly packages for Kubuntu. I'm using an intel card, and it worked fine on 4.1. It does work with XRender, but performance takes a massive hit.

Any help is appreciated!

I apologise for any lack of information i've provided, I'm ill at the moment (and so yes, rightly toying around with KDE!) Just ask me to provide any additional info.

Just try to disable the functionality checks. You find it via alt+f3 in any opened window -> settings -> desktop effects -> advanced

After disabling it it still failed.

"failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options. settings will be reverted to their previous values. check your X configuration. you may also consider changing advances options, especially changing the compositing type."

Do you have "Composite" mentioned anywhere in Xorg.conf ( located at /etc/X11 )

Nope.

EDIT: okay, after adding

Code: Select all
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

It still doesn't work, even with functionality check disabled.

Hmmm. I am not sure why it refuses to activate then.

Zarin, do you have any idea?

Try checking "Enable direct rendering" in Desktop Effects>advanced. Then if the compositing is still disabled force it on with Alt+Shift+F12 .

You could try re-installing your video driver. Sometimes when installing new, unproven(nightly builds) packages, the video driver can become corrupted.

I was just having similar issues as this. I changed "Texture Filter:" to "Bilinear" in the Advanced section of Desktop Effects, and everything started working again. Not sure why Trilinear isn't working.

I have the same problem with nvidia 6600. Drivers are installed. Composite is on in xorg.conf. 3D is on too. glxgears runs like soul escaping from hell. Run Forrest, Run!!! In fact Compiz Fusion works very fast with all effects enabled so why kwin+effects don't works using composite OpenGL? kwin+Xrender composite works but is terrible slow.

any idea?

KDE 4.2
SuSE 11.0 x64
kernel 2.6.25.20-0.1
