I have a 17" CRT monitor and I set it up at 1280*960. It works fine but when I shut down. The next time it reverts to a lower resolution. When I goto System Settings-> Display it automatically corrects itself. This is weird. It wasnt happening at first but it is now. I'm running KDE 4.2 on Ubuntu.

Your default resolution appears to have been changed somehow. You may be able to run KRandRTray to set the resolution on login.

Could you please post /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

Open the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf in a text editor such as KWrite, select all text, then copy it. Start a new reply, press the code button, paste the text, then close the code tag, and post the reply.

If he uses a plain install of Kubuntu 8.10, posting of the xorg.conf will be of little use, as it is empty by default since 8.10.
If that is the case, it may be usefull to skip the automatic detection by setting the resolution explicitly in the xorg.conf
