Hi,
I have problewm with launching desktop effects. I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 64bit and have nVidia GeForce 6600 video card. I have installed the latest driver downloaded from nvidia's site, not the restricted drivers that Ubuntu tells me to install, but I don't know what I must write in xorg.conf. I have installed Compiz-fusion before, some changes u must write and I have written them and everything worked fine. Also I have a problem with google gadgets - transparency with the sidebar and all gadgets. Please help. Thank you |

Could you please describe in more detail the problem with Desktop Effects? ( Error messages, events, etc. )

Assuming that you already have a healthy /etc/X11/xorg.conf (can't be to sure of *untus, they're missing all sorts)
there should be a line reading: Driver "nv" Change this to: Driver "nvidia" Log out and select "Restart X-Server" from the system menu on the login screen.

The version I had was Ubuntu Ultimate 64bit version. I couldn't launch desktop effects there, even Compiz-fusion didn't work. When I was launching compiz-fusion it didn't showed me decortations from emerald theme manager. I have reinstalled Ubuntu - decided not to be Ultimate, but normal Ubuntu 64bit with the latest driver from nvidia's site and KDE desktop effects and google gadgets are working fine now. Maybe Ubuntu Ultimate have some drivers preinstalled and with KDE 4.2 there have been problems. I can't install Compiz-fusion now. It has some problems with compiz-kde package.
EDIT this is what I get when I try to install

Assuming you have 4.2 installed right now, then this is based on libplasma3, and libplasma2 is the version packaged for 4.1 unfortunately

So is there any chance compiz-fusion to be launched in KDE 4.2?

At least not with compiz-kde, it depends on libplasma2, but libplasma3 (kde4.2) replaces it.
Of course you could try compiz-gnome if that fits your needs. |

I've asked elsewhere and they told that I must download and compile from scratch compiz-fusion. Maybe this way it'll work.
