KDE4 and compositing

Sat Apr 04, 2009 9:08 pm
Hi everyone!

I have some problems with enabling compositing effects on my gentoo linux. I've compiled plasma-workspace with compositing USE flag, enabled GLX and compositign extensions in xorg config. Also I've compiled xorg-server with VIDEO_CARD nvidia flag, and emerged dri2proto, and nothing ; When i trying to enable compositing effects in system settings -> desktop -> desktop effects hint says:

Code: Select all
Compositing is not supported on your system.
Compositing was disabled at compile time. It is likely Xorg development headers were not installed."

How can i enable this effects? Where i did mistake?

Can you run "glxgears"?

If you don't have them installed, it's in x11-apps/mesa-progs package.

What's interesting is that it says that that they were disabled at compile time... Have you tried reemergeing KWin? Maybe portage screwed up the ordering and the headers ware installed after KWin.

Here are my flags if that helps...
Code: Select all
[ebuild   R   ] kde-base/kwin-4.2.1  USE="kdeprefix opengl xcomposite -captury -debug -xinerama" 0 kB

And one more question, how can i get additional effects in gentoo? In arch linux i had much more effects. Also my shadows looks more like a transparent border than real shadow...

I'm not sure because I haven't used seen what Arch provides, but I have about 30 effects in System Settings » Desktop Effects » All Effects. The shadow configuration should also be there.

By "flexible windows" do you mean "wobbly windows" or is it something else?

You should definitely have those effects in there. They're a part of the KWin package:

Code: Select all
$ equery f =kwin-4.2.1 | grep wobbly
/usr/kde/4.2/share/kde4/services/kwin/wobblywindows.desktop
/usr/kde/4.2/share/kde4/services/kwin/wobblywindows_config.desktop

That's really strange... :-S

Could you post the output of
Code: Select all
emerge -pv kwin

Code: Select all
mantis marq # emerge -pv kwin

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Sorry, but I'm afraid I can't really help you... :(

You could try asking on Gentoo Forums or even on IRC (#gentoo-kde on Freenode)

Or, you could wait until 4.2.2 is added to the portage tree (I heard they are planning to do it this on Monday. Maybe after rebuilding it, it will start working correctly...
