Kubuntu 9.04 beta 64 bit, up to date updated. Ati Radeon X1600XT with open source driver.
I am experiecing freezing when using Desktop effects, by freezing i mean keyboard don't react, mouse sometimes work. Only solution is hard reset. And i dont receive any rash report.
I did some research and come to this conclusion:
On Kubuntu Alpha 6 everything worked fine, but with beta came kernel update and that is the time when problem has start to show up.
I tried to use Compiz and worked flawlessly.
Also when using Compositing type: XRender don't have any problems with randomly freezing.
Hope this help to someone who is smarter then me, and solve the problem.
If you need some more information please ask. I reported bug on launchpad and on internet i found more people with this problem.

This is a known Bug somewhere within Kwin xorg-ati oder xserver package that has yet to be fixed. It also seems to affect other distributions and not only Jaunty.

It has been reported mostly with ATI cards, but som users report this issue with other cards as well. For most user Compiz runs fine and Kwin + XRender also (but Xrender produces artifacts and distortion sometimes).

The freeze stoped when i change the version of kenel. If you have problems try to boot with line:
